Uneven Brake Wear and Smell from engine.
First thanks to everyone on this site. I've been reading it for about 6 months and have finally bought a 8. Anyway on to the question.
Brake Dust. Ive read all the post about it so i knew to expect it, but i have a ton of break dust on the driver side wheel and almost none on the passenger. Is this normal or are my brakes messed up.
Next. I have never owned a brand new manual tranny, how long does it take to break in the clutch on this bad boy.
Next. Usualy after leaving first i smell what seems to be oil, or maybe burning clutch, but its a smooth start. I also smell this after slowing down from a high speed, like getting off the highway. No signs of oil blowing out, and the car runs great, just wondering if this is normal.
Thanks all.

Oh yeah...the clutch doesn't need a break in period. You won't be going hard on it anyway if you break the engine in properly. Check the owners manual for the engine break in period. Dunno what the go is with the brake dust. If the car isn't pulling when braking or drifting to the left when driving, it'll be okay.

I've had that oily smell for a while at 20,000kms. It's different from the rust inhibitor stuff in that it doesn't smell like rotten eggs.
So when I changed the oil myself last time I made a special effort to wipe away a lot of the grime and stuff around the engine (I find if someone's not careful they can drip a lot of it down on top of the transmission from removing the oil filter). And I've noticed the gassy oily smell's gone!!!
Maybe try that and see?
The oil filter's in a really bad place to get out without dripping oil everywhere....

Well, I hate to just ruin everyone's excitement about the manual clutch...but... My experiences tell me that the "break in period" of a new clutch/transmission is as long as it may live (even if it's just 500 miles). Really that's not the case... Just break the motor in and you should be ok. I think the main thing is letting the seals seat.
