weird idle all of a sudden...
I went to Mammoth lakes for a week, altitude is 9,000 ft. (not sure if this is directly responsible.. but it started right after)
now when the car reaches normal idle after cold start, it does this shimmy from 900k to 1,400 over and over until ive driven the car around for a bit.
seems pretty intermittent (spelling) sometimes it will do it after the car is warm and been driving all day.
anyway, bringing the car to galpin mazda tomorrow boooo, was wondering if anyone had this happening..

How old is the car?
I had my 2004 in the shop, tested for the recall, and had it for five days with extremely similar symptoms. A few months before I had it tested it had had jumping rpms at idle and stalled. Once. Then when I got it back after it passed the apparently vigorous testing for the recall, and the 30K checkup, the idle was always messed up. It would go from the usual just under 1000 to revving between about 500 and 1200 in neutral.
I took it back in after five days and Mazda ended up giving me a new engine under warranty. They didn't give me great details on what was wrong, but implied that I had run it dry on oil.
I worked at a Dunkin Donuts at the time and had this fairly regular customer with a silver RX8. I found out the exact same thing had happened to his automatic - tested okay for the recall, then engine replaced under warranty when the damn thing stalled every time he was at a stop.
So I'm really interested to know if this is the same at all...

I don't have the rough idle issue, but I see a distinct pattern with engine replacements and little explanation as to why.
I know the Mazda techs are not Rotary Engine Pros, but it sounds like Mazda is OK with replacing engines left/right/center, instead of fixing the actual problem.
From reading various threads about engine replacements, it seems many of the symptoms prior to engine swap differ.
I guess you could deduce that there are many different problems with this generation of Rotary, but not really any 1 serious deficiency!
Good news? Perhaps!
Sorry for the thread-jack, and best of luck getting your idle issue fixed.
Cheers,
Ed

things have took a turn for the worse, now its on full time, no more intermittent... so i guess it will be easier for the dealer to diagnose and fix... quickly. =)
with the clutch pedal out, in neutral the car will rev from 900 to 1400 constantly until i put the clutch in. doing it all day regaurdless of operating temp.-- (funny though, car felt powerful.. maybe the low temps outside..)
car scheduled for dealer first thing monday morning - (6sp '04 40k miles, latest recall)

update:
Im in a dirty ford focus rental until tomorrow..
they didn't even check for the problem really, and ofcourse the idle was perfect when they checked it.. I told them to check the Neutral Pos. Switch (thanks swoope).
basically they said the part is on order, here is your POS ford, pick up the car tomorrow.
why cant they throw in MS suspension for my troubles?
