Hey, I just noticed this thread. I have a 2005 RX8 GT with 55k miles. I bought it in 2008.
1. The engine was replaced at around 10k miles when the first owner had it.
2. I replaced all the coils and wires in an attempt to solve misfires and flooding, maybe around 30k.
3. I had the engine replaced again at 40k.
4. 4th gear synchro started acting up after 50k miles. I replaced it and the clutch with a used S1 transmission.
5. That transmission was a bad bet and is now being replaced with an S2 box.
6. Driver's sun visor split and I fixed it myself with aluminum screw posts.
It's a great car and really puts a smile on my face when it works.

Stuff I changed in the last 2 weeks,
one threebond de carb and one water de carb
Removed the ganador door mirrors and replaced them with stock mirrors,
Removed mazdaspeed side skirts
Left hand side oil cooler,
Oil and filter,
Fitted a radiator fan mod kit, runs at least 10-15 deg C cooler now,
Changed intercooler to a smaller one for more airflow to the radiator,
Opened up the bonnet vents for more airflow,
2 kw 13 tooth starter motor,
fixed fishbowl tail lights and changed some burnt out bulbs.
Next week,
Change all 3 radiator hoses and fit mishimoto 76 degree C thermostat, flush cooling system, new coolant and water wetter,
Change supercharger oil,
Replace broken wheel stud (whoever put the wheels on my car whilst owned by the previous owner tightened them so much that they broke a wheel stud and I needed a breaker bar to undo the rest)
Order some project mu hc pads and new front and rear discs.
Then get stuck into the FD !

2004 automatic with 71,000
I regard these items replaced/broken as 'premature' :
Engine at 45,000
Rear wheel wells rusted out in 4 years
Both motor mounts, a year after engine replaced
External oil lines rusted out
Right side lower control arm cracked
Alternator
Heater control head failed
Radio/CD unit failed
Coolant sensor in reservoir
Transmission pan rusted/leaking most recently

Please help!! Radiator hose
Sorry for the ALL CAPS ATTACK!! So today the nipple thing from my radiator broke off. It's the part that the radiator hose connects to. I'm not good at explaining it, so here's a picture. Need some advice on how to fix it

Best thing to do is replace it. You can upgrade to a Megan racing radiator for $165 right now on thmotorsports.com. That's the best fix. You can also use something like jb weld to fix it, but I wouldn't suggest that. You can also get an auto radiator from autopartswarehouse.com for about $90. The auto will fit a manual, but not vice Versa. You just won't need to hook up the auto lines. It's a job to replace the radiator, but can be done with normal tools. When u remove the condenser leave it connected to the ac lines, and disconnect the four bolts from the radiator. The radiator may break when removing these bolts since the plastic degrades so much.

My '05 Shinka was purchased new in 2/06. (Sat on the dealer's lot for a long time.) Currently it's got 35K miles:
• Sirius satellite antenna needed to be replaced around 2012.
• Center console lid button failed. Replaced several years ago.
• Driver's side side mirror started rattling. Adjusted last year.
• Sunroof developed squeak in year two. Adjust per TSB.
• False "low coolant" light in 2013. Replaced coolant tank with revised model.
• Clutch pedal developed "squeak" in third year. Adjusted per TSB.
• Oil dipstick had "foamy/milkshake" oil in winter in year three. Fixed per TSB.
So yeah, I've had my share of problems. But hey, it's a car… what are you gonna do?

There are radiators available at o'reilys or advanced auto parts for under $100.00, but , remember this will be the nylon top and bottom radiator caps and are subject to heat prostration and depending on your summers won't last too long any way.
Just FYI i purchased a 2 core all aluminum radiator with trans cooler for $150.00 and it will out last several of these stock nylon radiators. Just my opinion , but the stock radiators in the rx8 are junk, and again that's my opinion. I have a 2004 rx8 and my radiator lasted for 110,00 miles, but then on the other hand my 1982 f-150 is 34 years old and still has the original radiator because it's not made of nylon, it's made of metal. Best of luck with it .

Radiator breakage
Hi 200. mph, do you have any technical reason why i need to replace a perfectly working radiator?
I fixed the hole with a brass tube joiner (different ends) then used seriously glue(can withstand up to 130°c) on the bit that goes into the radiator, but there is still a slight leak on the front side (front facing). Can't really see spot it's leaking from.
There's someone on here that did his, but can't remember the id.
Any technical help would be appreciated.
Regards
Reginald.

Things that have broken? Hmm, let’s see... the button on the sliding console cover crapped out a few years after I bought the car. Replaced it.
The Sirius antenna connection (in trunk) failed a few years ago. Had it replaced.
The gas cap also failed, triggering the “loose gas cap” code. Had it replaced, too.
Coolant tank suffered the bad float/faulty “low coolant” light. Replaced.
One of the tabs on the battery cover cracked when I had to access the battery terminals a few weeks ago. Ordered a replacement.
And recently, there’s condensation in the left headlight. Will prob have to replace. Grrrrr.
So yeah, I’ve certainly had my share of problems over my 12+ years of RX-8 ownership!

Shocks collapsed at 120k
Brake disks 130k.
Leading plug electrode at 157,450k
Engine, 157,451k
Well, not dead. It ran fine and made good power. But hardened steel free insiude an engine is never good for it.
Bushings may need doing. Theres rust on the sills under the hammerite and the sump had near rusted through anyway. There's a new engine in it now. With more stuff to break

09 RX8 with 84k miles
I've replaced a ton of other stuff that wasn't necessary but here are some of the items that were worn and needed replacing.
- Windshield washer pump
- Center console (tab that hold it in place was broken from previous owner)
- Shift **** (was worn out and scratched)
- Shift boot had holes and cracks
- Middle air vents (silver paint had chipped off)
- Handbrake (Plastic tab was breaking off)
- Fuse box (tab to lock the cover had broken off)
- Driver seat back cover (had some cracking on the left side bolster)
- driver side airbag (the plastic cover had some minor cracking)
- Bose Amp (sent it to the UK to fix it)
No real mechanical issues that weren't self inflicted or preventative maintenance. I'm sure at this point the engine has less than stellar compression so a rebuild will be in order when money permits.

04 RX-8 Base, Brilliant Black. it has 96k miles and has been an excellent car thus far. Honestly has been very reliable and has been super enjoyable to own and drive. I have replaced the following:
-engine
-water pump
-prop rod hold down clip
-all maintenance items to include filter, plugs, wires, BHR coils, Mishimoto radiator, diff and trans oil engine oil, belts, battery, brakes, tires, wipers etc. All normal things you would expect to replace over 96k miles honestly.
The car currently needs:
-evaporator core
-coolant expansion tank due to a faulty sensor
-paint
