what could be the reason?
i own a 03 rx8 ... last week, suddenly i felt i wasnt getting enough power at some stage .. but it was getting worse .. it was an evening, so i thought i would get it home asap. on the way home , i had a really bad time ..i had to keep my revs up to make it go .. and just before i reached home , i got this burning smell and some smoke from engine ..
next day i towed it to mazda, and they just told me one of the rotors is not working and i got to replace the engine .. and i have no warranty ..and said it would cost me around 12000. i just towed it again to a rotary workshop .. and they said they would tell me about it after the weekend.. i tried to start my car again .. it would just alive if i keep the revs high ..
now does have any idea on what could be the fault ? i cant afford to replace the engine as im a uni student .. thnks

Is the car out of warranty? Where are you located? Has the car ever flooded? Was the engine "recall" procedure done on the car?
Could be a clogged cat in which case, if you are in the US, the dealer will have to replace it under the emissions warranty. If the dealer price for replacing the engine is in USD or comparable dollars, that is a bit much. A good rotary shop can install a remanufactured engine for no more than half of that.
