Supposed to improve gas mileage too.
There's this other thread that discusses quick boost, as well.

Do you have an answer yet?
Sorry, I forgot about this, but I just found the answer as I was reading an article about how the government is not requiring a new fuel economy testing procedure from the EPA. Rather, a new calculation method will be used. Anyhow, the article stated that the test is performed with A/C off, so it most likely that the compressor cycling strategy was not developed with fuel economy in mind.

At least on my 8 I've noticed the AC cycles off when I'm stopped, kicks on full bore once I'm moving at a decent clip. I'd assumed it was just to keep things from getting too hot under the hood.

In order to familiarize myself with how all this works, when you turn the fan dial switch, you're just adjusting the HVAC/AC Blower, and has not effect on the Compressor, right??.
And when you're adjusting the temperature switch (from blue to red), what exactly is that doing??
Is it moving the vent from the A/C Evap to Heater core?? And where is the heater core in relation to the Evaporator core in the 8??

The answer for me was found in another thread. This worked wonders for me. Here's the procedure:

AC NOT COOL (AFTER 9/11/03 PRODUCTION)
Applicable Models
Model Starting S/N Ending S/N
2004 RX8 40118171 ********

Some customers may complain of lack of AC cooling from the vents. This may be caused by the intake air selector (recirculate / fresh) in the "FRESH" mode. Cooling the interior of the vehicle may take longerif the air intake selector is in the "FRESH" mode. Maximum cooling is acheived when the intake air selector mode is in the "RECIRC" position. The AC amplifier can be programmed to automatically default to "RECIRC" mode when the following conditions are met: 1. Ambient air temperature is 68 deg. F or higher. 2. HVAC control mode is in "FACE" mode. 3. HVAC temperature is in maximum cool setting. Customers with this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the repair procedure. NOTE: Vehicles produced before 9/11/2003 are not programmable N should have the AC amp replaced per Service Bulletin # 07-002/04 1. Verify concern. 2. Verify ignition switch is in OFF position. 3. Press and hold the front defrost and air intake selector buttons simultaneously. 4. Turn the ignition key to the "ACCY" position for 3 seconds. (Continue to hold the buttons down from step #3.) 5. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position for 3 seconds. (Continue to hold the buttons down from step #4.) 6. Successful programming will be confirmed by the rear defrost indicator light flashing 3 times. NOTE: If vehicle's battery dies or cables are removed, the programming will not be retained and must be performed again.

I had Ice 32 added last year for $65 at a Firestone dealer. It definately lowered the air temperature by 5 - 10 degrees. Plan on almost always running the A/C in recirc mode if you want it to cool. After Ice 32 it also cools downs much quicker. I also wrapped the line under the hood mentioned earlier in this thread. There is a way to program the unit to default to recirc mode whenever the A/C button is pushed. I did this but don't remember how it is done
It is super hot and humid here during summer, but after these couple of mods and tinted windows, I would say my A/C is bearable. As far as gas milage goes, I have always gotten 20+ mpg (260 - 270 miles @ fuel light).

I have a 2005 6-speed manual. The air-conditioning has worked great. Even on very hot 95 to 100 deg F days, the car cools down within a few minutes. In long distance highway cruising the air-conditioning with the fan speed on #1 or #2 is more than adequate to keep the cabin comfortable. Reading the threads, I would have thought the A/C was horrible. That is hardly the case for me.

I'm sure that Mazda doesn't want an efficient system or happy customers, that's why they don't care about something so easy as wrapping the frosty pipe ...

Yep same reason they didn't develop the RX8 with a factory turbo and 350+ bhp, I'm sure cost had nothing to do that decision either...

Frosty pipe mod does have some positive affect (effect?) on the cooling, whether it's placebo or not, it's worth the $7 and a trip to Home Depot. Buy some CFL light bulbs while you're there and make it worth your time.
