What's Striped Zone?

I know a beep sound comes on when you hit the striped zone as a warning. I experienced it today unintentionally. But why is there a striped zone when there is a red zone? Does it do any damage to engine when you rev it to the striped zone but not the red zone?

striped= yellow line
solid= red line

The beep comes in at 8500 rpm. Red line is at 9000K, I love the sound of that beep!

I know all that. But I wonder if reving to striped zone (8500 RPM) is bad for the engine.

It's like the "warning track" on a baseball field, to let you know you're getting close.

Had mine to 11,500 a few times and it still runs like new. Like they said, don't worry about it.

Peek power is developed at 8500 RPM by the high-power engine (6MT).
That is where the striped zone starts.
If you are in the striped zone, you are still in a "legal"RPM range, but beyond
peek power.

Mine goes to '11'....

Seems to be no damage if you get to 12k or so.

No rev limiter bypassing needed - a quick downshift from 6th gear to 4th at high speed, miss 4, jam into 2.....et voila! 12k rpm!

Yes, Stealth, a light flywheel will let you shift into any gear from any gear won't it? The fuel shuts off and every single dash light comes on but at least we know the engine will mechanically tolerate such speeds. Yikes. I did it twice in a row at Road Atlanta. All I could say to my instructor was "Good thing it's a rotary!" amidst my laughing out loud.

If one is drag racing running the engine slightly beyond peak h.p. helps to keep you in the peak range when shifting to the next gear. That's why I run mine to 9,500 depending on conditions.

Havent missed any downshifts yet, only up so far. I am sure it will happen sooner or later. Glad I know what to expect when it happens. I would freak if I saw all the dash lights at the same time as missing the shift. haha First thought would be, "Oh crap, I did it now!"

We're not talking about missed shifts, we're talking about missing gears on the down side and actually letting out the clutch pedal. At 80 mph in second gear your engine will do about 11K-12K rpm's. It seems by what Stealth has said I am not the only one to find that out the hard way.

The clutch I am using can handle far more torque than the engine can produce and more than the tires can hold, so I am not worried about it. Although ACT rates the pressure plate/disc good to 9,500 I am sure that is a conservative number and the fact that my clutch is still working well shows the quality parts ACT produces.

I had a kevlar clutch on one of my ehicles. Unbelievable. Is such a thing available for the RX8.

As far as ACT products go I don't see any Kevlar available, just sintered iron and metallic/ceramic. Those are in their Xtreme line of racing discs and are not recommended for street use because they are unsprung. They also state that 4-puck and 6-puck sprung discs will be available in Spring of 2005, so they should be available about now.

I think I remember seeing that Exedy had a Kevlar surface available but I didn't follow up on it.
