When was your first oil change?

For those who bought new, how many miles did you wait to change the oil?

I just bought an '06 GT six speed, dealer says 3000 miles. Car had 14 miles on it when I took delivery.

Looooove the car.

3000ish for the 1st.

every 4500 +/- miles thereafter, with 1 quart added over the interval. 64kmiles on the car now. Some will say that my interval is way too long, and that you should do it every 3000 miles at the maximum. But my way works fine for me. 3k is hype, even for rotaries (naturally aspirated ones at least) in my opinion.

i would say 500-1500 miles for the first. then every 3k afterwards.

I did mine somewhere around 1400 miles. Then did diff/tranny fluid swap around 3k (been two years, can't remember exact times)

3k first one, since it was free. I generally go 4k-5k, as I agree 3k is oil change shop/dealer hype. imho
Of course I check the '8's oil level often and add as req'd.

1000km for my first oil change.
Which was 6 days after I got the car.
(Only managed to put on another 35,000km in the 36 months since)
So I've had it changed every 3 months since.

It good to get the first one change at about 1000 miles. After that, its maily what you feel comfortable with. I get free oil changes from my dealer, and they recommend one every 3750, so thats when I bring it in.

Your first oil change should be right after you get home! Change it and the filter after 20 miles. There are lots of particles in the engine from the initial startup that you don't need staying in the system. I forgot who, but someone on the forum did try this to verify it and he sent out an oil sample to find lots of metal particulates from break in. Most of your break in is done after the first 20 miles anyways. Change it again at 500 miles and 1000 miles. Then start your regular oil change interval. Whatever you do, just change theoil and filter yourself. A dealership is a complete waste of time for somehting so simple and mundane and they'll argue with you about what oil to put in as well as try to do other unneccesary things to your car. If you love your car, change your oil frequently at first and keep it away from a dealership service center unless something catastrophic requires warranty work.

I did 1500 on the first and just did my second at 4200. A friend did a blackstone oil analysis on his 04 bone stock 6spd which he autocrosses and they told him to change more frequently than 3000 miles. Blackstone reccomended every 2000-2200 miles, he uses 5w20 conventional havoline.

3,000 for the first.

I'm making an appointment for the second one next week. I just turned the odometer to 7,000 miles earlier this week.

Bought my '8 with 600 mi showing. Had the dealer change the oil/filter before I took delivery. (It was on the delivery papers, but did they actually do it? Only some "Supreme Being" and the salesman know for sure) Did my next change and tire rotation at 5k. Plan to do oil/filter and tire rotations at 5K intervals. (dedicated winter tires/wheels make this schedule more complicated, but I'll make it work!) If I remember right, the Mazda recommended oil interval is 7500 miles. The 2K - 3K intervals seem a bit over done, but if you have the time and $, why not! It sure can't hurt. But then I would guess the mfgr would not say 7.5K if they thought there was the slightest chance there would be a problem!!

Until I see some convincing contradictory data, it's 5K for me.

First change was @ 1000 miles, second change @ 3000 miles, then every 3K planned after that. Seemed to be a very smooth plan to follow, and sets up for an easy to remember schedule

OK maybe I'm going crazy here but I've got the owners manual for both my 2005 and 2006 RX-8's here and here are the recomended oil change intervals

2005 every 8000km (5000 miles)
2006 every 12000km (7500 miles)

Can someone else confirm this or am I insane?

That's what mine says too, but the first oil change always makes me nervous. My dealer service manager told me 3k, so that's what I'll do.

However, almost anything counts as "severe" for the oil change intervals, where they drop in half. I'll probably change it a bit early.

I don't get why some of you guys are changing oil at 1/2 the recommended interval. The car uses oil between changes anyway so there is freash oil going in regularly . The only time you should be doing that is if you don't do enough miles - ie it should be changed every 6 months regardless of how many miles you do.

yes it eats oil but sometimes the dirt thats at the bottom of your oil pan wont go up. and you dont want those to stay there for long enough to let your engine eat them.

Thats why you need oil change.

As for the "how long should I change my oil", thats a personal question. I change mine about every 1.5 - 2.5K. expensive ? Oh yes. Worth it ? For me, yes.
