Arrow Whining noise debate (please read, responses welcome)

Hi peeps,

My '05 AT RX-8 produces a distinct "whining noise" at each shift point. Either in sport mode or full auto. I can also produce this noise by getting up to speed, popping into neutral, and revving up gingerly. So in other words, it seems to do this under load, and not-necessarily under load

This "whining noise" has been getting louder as I have owned the car, and now produces a slight rattling in the shifter.

I took it to the dealer that sold it to me, and they first said they could not reproduce the sound (insert laughter here). It's odd that it happens to me AT EVERY SHIFT CHANGE!

I took it to another dealer that I have always been more fond of (bought my Mazda3 from them back in '04), and they oddly enough say that they cannot hear the "whining sound", but are going to replace the rear passenger wheel bearing, and the right engine mount. They say they hear a humming from the rear, and that the engine mount is fluid filled, and leaking.

Anyway, I'm concerned the "whining sound" is not engine mount related or right wheel bearing related either.

I just can't see how the whining is produced by the faulty engine mount.

Regardless, I'll let them fix these two problems (under warranty ) and see if it solves the problem.

Any comments?

Edblor

P.S. Thanks for hearing me out, perhaps someone else has had this issue. I did do a search, and came up with various problems and solutions. I'm not confident mine is similar though.

My dealer ordered the new front right engine mount, and rear right wheel bearing, so I took it in last Friday.

They had it the whole day (8AM to 5PM) and only replaced the right engine mount (wrong part ordered for the wheel bearing).

Anyways, the whining is still present, and I noticed on the workorder that they hear the whining sound, but claim it is "normal".

Wow, just fvcking wow!!!!!!

What has anyone else done to actually have them fix this? From the sounds of it, they do not intend to look further into it. I have read other posts about differentials being replaced, trannies being replaced, and even new engines!

Anyone have anything to add????

Thanks,

Ed

I have had 2 '05 AT's and have not heard the sound you are describing.
I shift in sport mode all the time,, I shift about 4000-5000 rpm in normal driving and have heard nothing.
Nor have I heard this noise at full rpm.
Try to be a bit more descriptive of the sound you are hearing. And what is happening at the moment of this sounds occurance.

When in gear, the "whining" happens at shift points, for about 1 to 1.5 seconds AFTER the shift change. When not in gear (neutral), I can reproduce the "whining" noise by revving up to various RPMs (depending on how fast I am going, in other words, getting up to speed (60KM/h) and popping it into neutral).

This "whining" noise kinda sounds like a belt rubbing against metal, or perhaps metal on metal. Not super loud, but most definitely audible. Sounds like a screeeching sounds.

Now that the nice weather is here, it is more apparant with the windows down.

There are no noticeable rumblings or other noises, nor is there ant loss of power. Just his annoying whining noise.

Sorry I cannot be more specific about what it sounds like!

I guess I could describe the sound as closer to a whistling sound. It is MOST DEFINITELY not the intake.

It's not air rushing into the intake. It sounds like metal on metal, or a belt on metal. It happens right after a shift (either mode), and I can replicate it while in neutral, but only when the car is moving.

When in gear, it happens after the shift, and is about a second in duration. When in neutral, but moving, I can replicate and sustain the sound.

Then why does'nt every RX-8 sound like this? AT or MT?

And to be honest, it is an annoying sound. If I knew my car was going to make an annoying sound at every shift, I would not have bought it!

Would you have?

havent heard your noise so its hard to say- but every rx-8 makes noises whenthe various bits of the S-DAIS system do their job. it depends, of course, if i would find the noise annoying, yes? maybe i wouldnt. did you ask the dealer why the sound was normal?

my car makes a mysterious rattling noise in neutral. it disappears when you depress the clutch. funny thing, i thought i just had to tighten something, but nope! at the last meet three of us have the same sound. i think they all make some sort of weird noise, but i dont have an AT so i can't answer your question.

take your service writer on a test drive when you bring the car in ... drive him around until he hears the noise, or is so sick of driving around that he will replace just about anything to make you go away

RSD- if the MT noise goes away when you push the clutch pedal in thats normal gear rollover noise.

I hear a distinct whining sound from within the above post. Honestly, it is highly annoying. If I knew it was going to be this annoying, I would not have read this thread.

TYVM for the info zoom44 (finally, a response relevant to my thread).

I will check out my odd sound really closely today, but I think it only occurs at 4k or higher (that's about the RPM that I can reproduce it at).

Perhaps it is jut more ports opening, and what I am hearing is additional rushing air needed to feed them.

Thanks again

Edblor

^^^Yes I find your response, Red, extremely relevant to the debate. I, too, thought my responce was pertinant and relevant to the whole debate. We both were simply discussing perceived noise that was bothering us, both for differing reasons. I am not sure why the original poster finds our contributions to be superfluous. Perhaps it is a result of his condition.

Hey Ed! Want some cheese with that whine???

No thanks! But unless you have something to add that is not sarcastic, or negative to my original post, please keep your comments elsewhere.

I think you will note that zoom44's comments were both respectful, and helpful.

Cheers,

Ed

To find out whether this is what the noise is do the following. when you hear the whinning, step on the gas, it should go away rather quickly becaue the intake will open up all the way. Every 8, as far as I know, has the whinning noise at certain times.
