will the 09 oil pan fit earier models?

Has anyone looked closely at this?
I believe the bolt patten is the same?
But i am not sure.
The 09 is MUCH better with its baffles etc.
If it will work i will do this.

I would say no based on the diagrams I have seen and this from the '09 highlights.

OIL PAN CONSTRUCTION [13B-MSP] id0111e4100400
! The oil pan consists of a thinner, steel type oil pan
and an aluminum oil pan upper block. With the
shape of the oil pan upper block projecting
towards the vehicle right side, oil capacity has
been increased, stabilizing the oil pressure during
cornering even at lower oil levels.
! The oil baffle plates have been adopted inside the
oil pan upper block to stabilize engine oil slosh or
aeration when the vehicle rolls and to prevent air
suction in the oil strainer.
! An oil level switch, equipped inside the oil pan
upper block, operates a warning if the oil level is
lowered to a certain level. (The warning buzzer
sounds and the warning light in the instrument
cluster flashes. Afterwards, the warning buzzer
stops and the warning light switches from flashing
to continuous illumination.)
! A silicon sealant with excellent sealing qualities
has been adopted.
End Of Sie NG: OIL PUMP

Sounds like completely different system.

TZ250, You can't always go by what the Sevice Highlights say as there are many so called 'new' changes are not new, (like the Oil Level Sensor) the best way is to compare the genuine Mazda Part Numbers between series..

I have heard unofficially YES you can..

There are TWO Mazda Parts You have to purchase, the inner set and the outer sump (sorry Oil Pan)..
One of the two Baffles (10-406A) is the same one used in S1 RX-8's.

These are the two parts needed...

N3R1-10-380B Block Oil Pan (10-380)
N3Y3-10-400A Pan, Oil..this is the actual Black Oil Pan. (10-400)

Note: See the Blue Circle, this is the actual NEW Baffle, the other one above remains from S1.
The GREEN Highlight is the alloy extension that goes under the Exhaust Manifold which increases the Pans Oil Capacity.

The Oil level Sensor is the same as S1.

N3R1-10-380B Retails (USA) $442.10
N3Y3-10-400A Retails (USA) $202.34

Bolts...
You can re-use the existing Outer Pan Bolts 9YA02-0601 From S1 and you will have 7 left over as the S2 only uses 15...S1 uses 22.

BUT you will/may have to order 19 of the 99794-0830B Bolts if they do not come with the set, sorry I can't confirm this as they look outside the "Boxed" or 'Lined' Description, this usually means you have to purchase them in addition, sometimes this can also not be true.

99794-0830B Retails (USA) $3.10 Each

For a Dealer to show this bolt listed means they have sold them before, this Bolt is also used in Series 1 RX-8's for the Knock Sensor fixing.

it would probably be easier to buy or make this for your original pan/sump

also note that the 2-pc 09 pan requires all the bolts etc. to mate the bottom and top pieces as well

You're not one of those dummies who changes synthetic oil every 2500 miles, are you?

Otherwise, he probably gets a lot less excited about the idea of burning up the engine on his track car ....

One thing I can't confirm and forgot OD is the Oil Pick Up..

The S2 one is different (S2 Specific) and looks by diagram to be more straight.
The S1 (S1 Specific) Oil Pick up has a slight bend to it when you look at the parts diagram.

So, I am not sure if this will add to your worries?

Overall length and size between the two looks to be about the same, it is just than kink or bend at the pick up end on S1..
