Window Clunk

Hey all -

So, I got this clunk coming out of my driver's side window whenever I roll it up to the top. Other than that the window seems to be working just fine, but I am worried that whatever has come loose will continue to loosen until it breaks.

I'm sort of assuming that the window has a loose or breaking regulator [if anybody has a better idea, I'm all ears]. Has anyone gotten in there to see how hard it would be to install a new one? Does replacement of the regulator also require a replacement of the motor?

Any information that anybody has is certainly appreciated and thanks for your time.

i've removed my door panel before and thought i've left something loose. turns out that both sides do that and can tilt forward a bit. if thats the case, its normal.
but if otherwise...you've got something. but first check other side and rock it back and forth and see if its really bad...

if its not that bad, leave it be. you make the call.

Well, I've been listening to it clunk for a few months now, and I figured that in winter it would get very little use so there was less chance of catastrophic failure so I have let it go until Spring. Unfortunately, in the few months that it has been clunking it has gotten worse, and my thought is that there might be something that I can do to sort of slam it back together before whatever is loose breaks. It is definitely doing something that the passnger window is not.

There is probably a DIY on the inner door panel removal for the regluing of the styrofoam rattle problem, and I'll see if I can find that, but is there anything special that I should know about getting the panel off or on? Haven't been in there yet.

I am also sort of guessing that nobody around here has had this problem? I did a search and found nothing on clunks like this.

Charles, it is good to hear from you again, and I hope that you are well. I will DEFINITELY check that TSB. I must have missed it. Thank you for pointing it out.

Thanks to both of you, and any other thoughts from anyone, I'm all ears . - Haze

OK, I am a moron. I can't find the TSB on the Rosenthal site. Could you link me to it? Much appreciated if you can. All I could find was an inoperable Power Window TSB that was about the potential for bad switches back in '04. Sorry to be an idiot.

Had the same problem happen to me. Had it fixed under warranty.

They did tell me the mount or window regulator needed to be tightened. After they fixed it, I have not had a problem. I probably could of fixed it myself, but they were also replacing the motor mounts.

I'm well out of warranty at this point, and thanks for looking for the TSB. I guess that it got pulled down off the site.

Psonoda, Thanks. I was wondering if was just a loose mount. It sounds like if I just get in there and tighten it up, I should be fine. Thanks again - H

My left window has been clunking for a while.

Finally this weekend, I decided to do something about it. Removed the door trim without a DIY guide as its really that easy.

Found the window rail bolts loose. Tightened & ALL GOOD

The motor is fixed with 3x self taping cutting type threaded bolts that dig into the plastic/chipboard/whatever that inner panel is type material. Cable rail has 2 x bolts that slide through holes in the inner panel to be bolted down. Its those 2 x 10mm nuts that appeared loose.

Guessing this inner panel compresses over time allowing the nuts to go loose as the the original tightened gap expands.

Mines an 03-model so guessing its good for the next 5 years now...........

Thanks! I haven't done anything about this yet, as I am still waiting on Spring so the information is very useful. It also sounds dead easy. I'll probably loctite those bolts while I'm in there to attempt a few more years than the four that I got this time. I hope that you had a nice summer on the other side of the planet. All the best.
