Using the original mileage number of 263 and assuming that it was in fact exactly 3/4 of a full 16 gallon tank that was used, that would be 12 gallons consumed. 263/12=21.9 That's actually quite normal.

ok
um...
scientific? i dont think that means what you think it means.

My last 1/4 tank goes FAST. I have hit 300 miles on a tank twice. And that was after driving back and forth to work. The light was on for a while and I broke out into a sweat worring about running out of gas. (I was trying to make it Garner where gas is always $0.10 to 0.15 a gal. cheaper.)

I think being in one of the top engineering schools in the country, I do know what it means. It wasn't a big deal anyway, so I couldn't be bothered to use precise numbers. I just noted everything that I could note.

Hey now, lets leave the computer scientists out of this.
It's the universities that screw up that designation. I had to take enough classes in that area to be just shy of a math and some sort of science minor so that I could work with computers, WTF is that about?

After you graduate, I'd hate to be on a bridge you build cuz you couldn't be bothered to use precise numbers
shouldn't that have been the first hint that the tank has more than 12 gallons?? Or did you always fill up until gas started overflowing from the tank, hence the 12.38 reading?
And that's the low level light not empty light, which means there's still gas left in the tank. You wouldn't need an indicator light to tell you that there's no gas

my last tank i drove 295 miles. filled up 13.9 gallons. that means there are 2 gallons left. you can drive approximately 360 miles on 1 tank of gas.
swoope has offered the advice to never drive beyond 350 miles. he has personal experience in the matter.
edit: this thread was a let down btw.

the single biggest thing that affect my gas mileage is the quality of the gas. Not the octane rating, the brand or anything else but how much of the gas is gas and not ethanol or other aromatic compounds added that have less energy density.
I'm going on 72,000 miles, 04 all stock and right now the tank I have is over 240 and I'm 2 lines above the 1/4, say 1/3 a tank left. I'll get 320-340 on this tank with a ~13.5-14 gallon fillup. About 1/2 highway and mostly short ( 3 miles )commute to work and lunch and stuff.
I've gotten over 27 mpg on road trips.
I've also gotten **** gas with a lot of alcohol or something in it and only managed to get 200 miles to it. You can tell after the first 10-15 miles on a new tank if the gas is **** or not.

I got a CS major from a school primarily known for engineering, so I think I am well placed to comment on the relative merits of both. If I had to do it over again I'd have gone with a CSE major instead

I've still got a couple of classes to finish up but I'm basically in the same place.

Currently working on a 86 626 LX non-turbo for high mileage R&D testing. The last MPG check the car was at 56.9 miles per gallon. It should be getting 60+MPG by next week. My goal is a 80-100 MPG car before the fall.
My new Sky engine will be the one to beat, with its cylinder deactivation and computer controlled electric valves.
My 16X could also benefit from these lastest improvements.
