im getting loss of power as soon as i hit about 5-7k rpm. replaced sparks and cables. not the ignition coils since i didnt get the "misfire on cyl. 2" code after plugs and cables.
replacing the coils tomorrow, based off of what i have read. DEFINATLY coils!
have spent the past week bringing my new purchase back to life after the old owner tossed her in a lot for 4 months.
throttle body/cat/muffler/plugs/cables and 1000 dollars later.
i honestly would have spent more if i hadn't started reading forums and thanks to a couple users on here i saved $800+ oh and my mechanic happened to have an extra mint engine laying around by chance.
THANKS GUYS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No CEL's, and you wouldn't notice it by driving normally (under 75mph). I just replaced my plugs since I had an extra set laying around about 15 mins ago and it's still doing the same thing. Hiccups and gasping for air at 5k-ish rpms from 2nd gear up. 1st gear goes up to 6-7k no issues but I haven't ever brought the car to 9k rpms in 1st gear. 2nd and 3rd gear not as noticeable until you break 5k rpms and 4th-5th gear is terrible at 5k+ rpms.
Cleaned the MAF, reseated my air filter, checked oil levels. I've never cleaned the ESS before or looked at the SSV which may be related to my problems. I did the brake-stomping to reset the ECS too. The ESS looks easy enough to clean, but the SSV looks like a total pain in the *** to get to even tho the DIY video makes it look really easy. I don't even want to ask what a shop will quote me to clean that! I will be learning how to do these 2 steps tho if new coils/mid-pipe doesn't solve my problem.
I always fill with premium. Pre-mix never more than 4oz every fill-up. I recently tried a different gas at 89 octane on my last couple fill-ups. It's a little low octane rating but has no ethanol in it and was curious to see if I noticed any difference, but then this power loss started happening.
I've searched around the forums and other sites the last few days and basically it seems like it's either the ignition or a clogged cat. I have a feeling it's the cat, but not sure. It's such a common problem online I'm surprised it hasn't clogged up on me since I've had the car. I have a BHR mid-pipe on it's way to my door should be here by this Friday and hopefully with the new coils/plugs/mid-pipe I will be gtg.
Just reserved the last set of coils at the local shop here, they are giving them to me at 34.50 a piece which is a REALLY good price...since usually I have to order everything. Going to grab them since the price is right and see what happens. Will definitely update this tmrw (maybe tonight) after I install the coils.

Can you give us an update if the new coils solved your problem? I'm having similar issues now out of no-where. Car starts fine no hiccups (installed new starter a couple months ago), just replaced the air filter (stock) about a week ago and my car is also having top end power loss. Right now it won't red-line at all. It gets up there like its ready to go and then it starts gasping for air? Sorry I don't have a better description, but I haven't tried to red-line it again. All is good until I hit the 5k rpm mark then a sudden loss in power.

simple test unbolt your cat do not take it off and go for a LOUD drive (in the daytime of course) dont drive more than 2 miles like that TRUST ME youll destroy your whole exaust.
hope you dont gotta smog check due soon!

I'm doubting it's the cat. I wish it was since I got a mid-pipe on the way, but I think the motor is overheating and causing power loss. Check out my other thread:

i just posted there lol but if you were losing power due to over heating of any kind youd be replacing the engine. and the cooling system has nothing to do with check engine lights i think you asked that sumwhere? not sure
your cat would also cause overheating if its done for so your losing power because of no exhaust flow and no exaust flow is heating the engine i dont think you have a cooling problem at all if you dont see leak's
DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR UNTILL YOU CHECK THE CAT im 99% now that this is causing BOTH your issues if you cant find a coolant leak

no coils in yet. next weekend. today i changed the battery.
may not even be the cat. they said mine was plugged but when i replaced the muffler all this "bbq coal" stuff fell out from there.
today i also got a check engine light. pretty damn sure its coils.. still on originals after 80 thousand miles lol.
i will definitely update soon as its done.

Dude, your bbq coals are what's left of your cat.
It's blocking your exhaust
I almost think we're being punk'd.

Loss of power no CEL, / AC cooling Fan stops
Alright people I need some help, my 2004 RX8 it's losing power after I run it for about an hour, and it starts to make a rattling sound on the engine, temp it's fine, oil level good, the only warning light that I got its the coolant sensor level that quit on me about 3 months ago, I got it brand new but I havent got time to replace it. I took it to muffler shop and had the cat check and they said it was fine.
Another issue is the A/C it blows cold air when I'm running, but if I hit a light or traffic it doesn't. The cooling fan doesn't turn on immediately when I turn the ac on, it's start about 5 seconds after the compressor and remains on for only 1 or 2 seconds.

hope it works out.

I have my suspicions.
Did you inspect the cat before it was installed?
Shine a light through it?
Was it a bolt on OEM cat?
Have you changed everything behind the cat, and not just the muffler?
Have you been driving the car a lot while it's running bad?
Did you use OEM NGK laser iridium plugs?
Why would you change plugs & wires, but not coils?

I recently installed a new battery, today I was driving and my dash began to blink , no loss of power or anything but my stereo cut kept turning on and off. I'm guessing my batter could be shaking around inside because it is not fully harnessed? or i need a new ignition kit as well?
2006 GT w/84,000 Km . I'm guessing the none of the ignition has ever been replaced.

Hello,
Did this occur before you changed the battery?
Check that your terminals are tight and the battery is not sliding around
Plugs, OEM coils, & wires should be changed every 30k miles, (48k kms?).

yes bolt on mazda oem caT
i changed the muffler and the pipe between that and the cat.
yes i used oem ngk spark plugs.
and oem wires.
my mechanic did not think to change them, i am farely new to the rotary world and really know just the basics of automotive maintenence. so i did some research. have not drove her since because i got the 'carousel' light and cel light + loss of power. updates maybe wednesday?

It's not hard and can save you a bunch of money.
Plenty of info in the DYI stickies here on how to.
Read misfire ones also.

Also having low power issue
Im experiencing an extreme loss of power
little background: 04 AT, with around 135,000 miles after a cross country drive to SD I started loosing power having trouble on hills, and slow to anything beyond 70 mph, i took it to the dealership for a compression test and i was told that my rear rotor had lost compression.. so after shopping around i replaced the engine with a used engine. In the process coils, spark plugs and intake manifold were replaced also.
I recently got the car back, and it now has extremely low power, the CEL blinks while accelerating (which it does very slowly) no matter how depressed the throttle is the fuel delivery is the same, but if the car is rev'd directly after starting it seems to have full power but after the rpms are allowed to drop it losses its power again. the mechanic said the engine itself is strong and believes whats causing the power loss is electronic.
any ideas??

i have just changed my coils, but i am having the following problems which where not present before they were changed.
1: car takes longer to start from hot/cold
2: CEL is on and occasionally flashes
3: the sat nav screen doesn't pop open when the ignition is started, but does open by pressing the open button
any ideas guys,
thanks
