If you checked yourself was it difficult to check the Cat? Disassemble, etc..

I don't understand how the Cat plays a part in this. does the unignighted fuil clog the Cat or do something to it? I would think that any Cat would take away from MPG for the back pressure they create, and when they go bad actually desinergrate,, which I would thing would lessen backbressure on the engine and improve MPG. So how does this really work?

I know there is a metal mesh inside a Cat. does this metal swell and clog or is it impurities that clog the mesh,, and if it is impurities, "thearetically" it could be removed and vacumed out from the front end?

Once the CAT is clogged, it is history. You can not clean it out. Luckily, there is a 80k mile/8 year warranty on the CAT (I think it is 8 years, but I do know it is 80k miles for sure). So, if it is bad, you can get a new one from the dealer. To check it, you just disconnect the cat from the exhaust manifold (there are 3 bolts connecting the pipe) and look inside with a flashlight.

Here is my cat when my mileage dropped from 18-22 range to 9mpg, massive power loss.
The tube you see sticking into the cat is the O2 sensor bung, which is supposed to be between the two honeycomb meshes within the cat. The chunks are the first honeycomb, which there isn't enough there to make up a full honeycomb. The rest of it is powdered and packed into the 2nd honeycomb I imagine. Engine can't expel exhaust, not enough oxygen for good combustion, power loss, and pushing the pedal farther down to get the same speed, a drop in MPG.

Yeas, I have taken one off before and also have seen inside them. the first time I had a coil issue I didn't even know what it was. the dealer told me my enine was blown and they replaced it under waranty. while doing so they acussed me of cutting the inside out of my Cat and threatened to make me pay for the new engine. upon inspection and some over heated discussions the dealer showed me the differance between my old cat and a new one. the mesh in the older one started half way into the body of the Cat. the new one had mesh starting at the mouth of the Cat body. however I pointed out that there were no cut or goudge marks in or around the area inside the cat and there was no indication that there had ever been mesh in the emtpy part. He the nsurmised that the cat must have burned up. never the less they confiscated it and put in a new one. I found a significant loss of power from then on. I guess I was hoping to figure out a way of getting a half cat again without deliberately f**king up the one I have.

No CEL that was cat specific. I got alot of misfires, which led me to replace plugs, coils, wires, air filter, clean the MAF, reset the e-shaft sensor, before on the return drive from autozone and another diagnosis check I had the pedal to the floor in 3rd gear and couldn't get past ~55mph, which is when I knew it was the cat. Replaced under warranty by the dealer.
I still haven't 'fully' recovered, as I think I have a bad O2 sensor (front or rear is still up for discussion) which may have been damaged from the failed cat (excess heat), or caused the cat failure in the first place (excess fuel).

Some people do, but from what I see, most do not.

No matter how aggressively I may drive, I get 16 city/23 highway and have ever since Day One. I have 60,000 miles since my rebuild (but I used Mazda's pre-cut side seals rather than the custom-gapping I now do) and 110,000 on my housings. Lord knows how low my compression may be these days.
The tech merely plugged into the OBD port and that may not tell you what the problem could be. I typically tell people to start with things that cost no money to service; clean the air filter, wipe off the ESS, reset the ESS profile, clean the MAF sensor, etc.
After that, check the compression.

How does one wipe off the ESS. Is there pictures or something about where it is located and how easy would it be to do with only simple tools (jack and sockets)
