Angry 175,000 Mile Club Member needs help

Alright - I have had Multiple CEL's including Misfire (sorry cant find my notes) but here is what i have done:

New Coils
New Plugs
New Wires
New Fuel Pump

The power is back - Stuttering under load is fixed but the car will not Idle worth a darn. After resetting the Computer, Battery and Brake Method - I took it for a drive (NO CEL) and it seemed fine. Shut down restarted and Steady CEL and Low idle that it stalled. Went to AutoZone and they indicate a P0037Code.

That is the O2 Sensor He indicated Upstream and Downstream. Do I need Both Sensors????

Is the O2 Sensor the cause of my idle issues.

Will Seafoaming and Cleaning Engine Possibly correct this as I never did it but I have the Seafoam here and am mechanically able?

Thanks all!

In a closed-loop system, you will need Front O2 Sensor for correct oxygen feedback, so the ECU will give the correct fuel/air mixture.

The rear one is just there to check CAT efficiency.

at 175K miles I guess your O2 sensor is about time to "give up", change it. about 200 something bux.

if you got new coils, plugs, wires and fuel pumps already, try new O2 sensor first, if it doesnt fix your problem, I will check the engine compression. then I will check the throttle body.

175,000 miles

Yes - Original Engine - I am a super commuter (250 miles a day) all Highway.

So I am getting - change the front O2 Sensor. Is there a DIY Thread (I did search).

BTW - Engine is pulling strong again (Compression Feels Good??) and what about seafoaming???

well you drive a lot of highway miles so your engine should be pretty clean.

you can do it , follow my DIY, seafoam/zoom zoom cleaner is about the same.

its easy to remove the O2 sensor ---- as long as its not seized ! you need a O2 sensor socket. some PB Blaster, and some time.

Auto Zone

OK - I found the following Sensor and ordered it form AUTO ZONE ($181.00) for my P0037.

BOSCH 13772

Oxygen Sensor - OE Type - Exact Fit - Downstream Sensor w/ Manual transmission; 4 Wire; Heated; Check / Replace Interval: 100,000 Miles

Anyone have any knowledge of this part and if its a direct swap?

Original catalytic converter? Check that, it may be clogged.

Cat

It is the original Cat - But i did have big problems with the plugs. Wires and coils which are now all changed. The car runs very good with power now, just the issue with the CEL p0037 and the idling issue.

From what I read on the threads - The sensor can be damaged from the poor running condition it was in for an extended period, and the idling issue is most likely the Sensor (Hopefully this one (cat); and everyone else that has lost there CAT has had major Power issues and acceleration problems.

Well that is what i get from reading the threads. Lets keep our fingers crossed. Sensor will be in Wednesday. Hopefully Thursday I will post a 175,000 Mile car with no CELs and pass emission inspections on original engine and tranny!

**** I almost don't believe you!!! At my rate I'll be on engine 5 at 175k. One of my engines saw 90% highway miles and it lasted the longest (but still only 72k).

How many miles did you get out of the plugs before they felt poor and had hesitation? Mazda says 37K, but we have people getting much more.

Plus and Coils

I get about 50K out of my plugs and Coils. The wires were just changed for the first time this week.

I do drive this car pretty aggressively - but I also cruise at around 80 most of the time with pushes above 100 on occasion so she is treated good but hard.

I am still waiting for my Sensor to come in - But i noticed last night on the way home that POWER was way down. Stark contrast from the day or 2 after I changed all the plugs coils wires. I am hoping it is the sensor then as the computer relearned itsself and doesn't know where to adjust. I do no have the cash for a Catalytic Converter and NJ requires no CEL Lights and emissions and my inspection expires in 2 weeks.

I was looking at the Rotary Cat from here:

http://www.rx7.com/store/rx8/rx8exhaust.html

Any one have this and know if the sensor is installed will it still show a CEL??

175 000 miles, damn, that is more than the 280 000 km my golf4 has done. And today it is at the dealer for driveshaft issues.

I have one question for you, how often have you been redlining your car?

On a daily Basis!

Daily at least a few times! Reason I got this car was I drive the NJ - NY System - Needed that Power to merge and switch, does a darn good job.

I am being real ginger with it now! Need that CEL to go away I am not sure what is wrong so I do not want to introduce another issue by being too hard on it!

That CAT is alright, but dont expect it to outlast your Stock CAT.

You can always go to some junk yard to find a wrecked RX-8, Im sure most wreck's RX-8's CAT will be in good shape. and most junk yards will sell it to you for cheap, maybe 100 bux. before you pay them, take a flash light and look inside to check for any signs of "melting", if u see any, no good, find another one.

let us know. I am wonder that now that you have driven the car with a bad o2 sensor this will effect your air fuel ratio, and potentially just killed the cat
