Thumbs down Grrr

Okay,

I have had my rx-8 a little over a week. I have been babying it, for breakin purposes.

It is now making a hideous scraping noise whenever going into first gear from any speed, and the sound remains for the duration of first gear. It's not a gear grind. just sounds like... somebody tossed some sand into my transmission. The sound is incredibly bad with the clutch depressed in first gear while rolling.

The sound goes away in every other gear.

edit: sound seems to go away, but is still there. gears spinning slower.

Not what I was hoping for.

I am already annoyed.

Anybody experience this?

I called mazda, they will get me in on monday morning, but I don't feel like driving an annoying scrapey car all weekend, and I don't want to do any further damage.

call Mazda roadside assistance and have it towed to the dealer if you are that concerned. a "sand in the tranny" noise doesnt sound good to me. was this new or used? how many miles on the odo when you purchased?

it had 5 miles on it when I bought it. now it has 600.

My dealer is approximately a mile away, if that far. I think I can second gear start myself there.

But my feelings are irreparably harmed. a week old car!

I think maybe the grinding is the clutch.

I went out to the garage and the garage has that distinctive clutch smell. mmmm tasty.

this is just poo.

meanie.

Trying to resist the urge to go out and drop the clutch into first a few times and see if it grinds away whatever is making the noise.

okay, I'm joking too.

Angry Already off on the wrong foot.

Just thought I'd take a moment to rant.

I have had my rx-8 for 1 week and it is already going into the shop. First gear is scraping all the time, worse when the clutch is depressed.

I hope I didn't make a mistake with this purchase.

Ack Thpbltblt.

Stupid cheap mazda.

it scrapes from a standstill.

all the time.

worse as I go faster.

Not very nice sounding. Much much worse while clutch is fully depressed and in gear.

bring it into the dealership, there is something wrong. If you ignore it, your clutch will "turn blue" like some other people's when looking at it, then mazda will claim you abused the car.

Aye, it is too annoying to ignore anyway. it just started a couple hours ago.

they are closed for today, but I'll be bringing it in in the morning.

every car model has issues on some cars, so while it sucks when you get a lemon, don't assume they're all crappy cars

I've heard a few people having pressure bolts come loose because they weren't torqued properly.

Not necessarily Mazda's Fault

Someone how took the car on a test drive might not have know what they were doing and F'd the gears up a bit. Relax the thing is covered, everything will be ok. There are reliability issues with this car but that gears are not one of them.

nobody took my car for a test drive. 5 miles on the odometer when I got it.

Hopefully it is clutch bolts and I will be zooming away with a grin tomorrow.

We shall see.

I'm not really terribly upset with Mazda. But I am annoyed that I have to have it repaired this early into it's lifespan.

"stupid cheap mazda" is a figure of speech, heh. comes from the monkey story on the internet a few years ago.

the clutch noise appeared today. while driving. it is a hideous scraping noise while moving, and only in gear. not a stationary clutch popping noise. loud enough to hear over the stereo.

These things can happen with whatever car you buy, just let the dealer fix it. Could be something really simple? I know this will worry you about the quality of the car but I think after it is fixed and you drive it for a month or two, feeling how solid it drives, you will forget all about it. Good luck with the fix

Oh sorry, didn't mean to take it out of context, should have known better, I quote Simpsons all the time and I get people just staring at me.

Finding the Source of the Problem

I have owned many RX's since 1983. I have never seen a major tranny failure, usually the clutch dries up first - through-out bearing goes after about 25K on a 1991. If your car is under warranty and broken in, I recommend at a stop going up to about 7K in first and dropping the cluch, precided by mashing the throttle. Shift through as many gears as you can as traffic will allow. If you don't hook-up then it's most likey the clutch system. If the tranny holds up then keep doing this once or twice a week. Pretty soon the source of the problem will come forward.

Past experience with the Clutch - Tranny

Like I said I had a 1991 RX-7 some years ago. I had a defective through-out-bearing. The noise was generally louder when the clutch is in. I had to go to 3 dealers before one fessed up to a problem and fixed it under warranty. They replaced the clutch and bearing. With my 1991 the tranny was bullet-proof. If you have a problem this early then it is a defect. They need to replace the complete transmission, nothing else will do. Keep in mind, the clutch is what takes up the slack, you may burn up some clutch plates if you drive it hard, but the tranny should be able to take the heat. By the way I define driving hard as starts at 6-7K and hammering the throttle, Double clutching that brings the revs up to 6-7K, and aggressive shifting at 9K through all gears (well maybe not 6th since you will be really flyin then).
