UK 5-6k Rattle and power loss only when really hot

I have a 2006 231 and do a mix of lots of short trips (4 miles) and some long trips (200 miles) I am increasingly finding that towards the end of a long fast trip, especially on one route where there are lots of consecutive roundabouts from which to redline through the gears 1, 2 & 3 I get a serious rattle from the engine at somewhere around 5-6.5k and then a loss of power. After the car has been stopped for a while, all seems fine again including the redline acceleration method. The rattle comes from the top of the engine behind the dash centre.

I have recently put new coils and leads on and the car has just had is 6 year service (new plugs). Any clues? is it time to trade it in at the main dealer?
