Exclamation Acceleration and horrible noise porblem when going above 5500rpm

so i just noticed it recently as i was on the highway i set my cruise to 72 and i used the steering wheel controls to accelerate and there was no response. so i took it off cruise and tried accelrating and it made a really loud and bad exhaust note like twice as loud as usual while acclerating and there was absolutely no power. but when i went back into 5th it accelerated a little better but still the noise and lack of power. lower gears like 1st to 4th and normal around town driving theres no problem and even just normal revving. idk if its something to do with the exhaust i just put on. i recently put on a greddy se catback and K+N typhoon intake and wasnt till after the install that it happened.

i have an '04 6spd grand touring for anyone who may know whats wrong.
my mechanic friend said could be the exhaust but doesnt know anything about rotaries. please help = (

Sounds like your cat is plugged - if you have less than 80k miles, dealer will get you a new one.

Or if it wounds like your blowing into a straw in a cup filled with liquids and a lid it could be your coils and plugs

rotareriot- Since you're in Cleveland and I live in Akron, I can let you borrow my stock cat to try out.
I can't sell it to you because I need it for e-check

Loss of power during high acceleration/RPM is a likely sign of a bad cat.

He would probably get misfire codes if that were the case
But I have used coils laying around too!

The cat is part of the emission warranty, which should be at least 80k miles. Check you warranty booklet if you still have it.

Angry

okay i got it back from the dealer today and the best they could tell me was that theres too much airflow going into the engine and that i should take off any performance parts because my K+N intake isnt made for the car. they wouldnt check my catalytic converter so i may have to take it to another place around here to get an answer that actually makes sense. what do you guys think of that?! i tihnk the nechanic is retarded because ive never heard of that, last time i brought it in they flooded my engine because he "forgot it was a rotary." any intel would be greatly appreciaited at this point. because i'd hate to have to take of f my exhaust and intake. = ( i just got it.

Gotta love the stealerships
Talk to the service manager and tell him you want the number for the regional representative because you feel that they are misdiagnosing your problem.
See how quickly they cooperate.

Also, which generation typhoon intake do you have (either 1 or 2).

BTW.. which dealer did you go to?

True that but he never told us if he did have codes

rotareriot that dealershit is stupid. Lets see if we can help. What kind of K&N set up do you have? who installed it? did you remove the V-fad when you installed your K&N set up? if so did you block it off? some guy had the same issue and his car would keep stalling. SteathTL told him how to fix but he took it upon him self to post like "he" fixed it lol anyway. That might be where your issue is.

ill have to go up there and ask them about the manager then. and im almost positive i have version 2 of the intake. i went to Montrose Mazda on brookpark road. dont ever go there ive had so many problems like the flooding and i took it there on a full tank and it had like 75 miles more than what i brought it there with. but its the only one around that i know of. you know of any nearby?

I was getting there DOMINION when I asked about the generation he had installed
But you're right, it could have been something overlooked during the install.
I thought about that after posting the "stealership" comment.

i didnt have any trouble codes but i did take it in for a broken O2 sensor before i put my exhaust on and the shop owner told me he got a weird read out and to not replace it unless it came on again and it never did. the shop owners a family friend but he also said the dealer thing sounds shitty. i had him put my exhaust and intake on and he didnt take anything off as far as i know of cuz i was helping him do it. what do you guys think i should do?

I actually go to Cascade Mazda in Cuyahoga Falls, but I'm further south than you.
Might want to head over to our regional thread and ask the other locals where they go (I forget right now).
Before you rush into threatening for the regional representative's number, it might be best to verify that your intake is installed correct (cover all grounds).
We can meet up and I'll take a glance at it if you want.
