Another steering problem, Light/heavy/light, both directions
Hi, first I have checked many previous threads and been through searching, but couldnt find just the same issue. Please try to resist flaming
I have also had the harness out and done all connectors and checked the harness continuity to cover the norm.
2004 Base model 6-speed. Steering seems to go from light to heavy to light in both directions during turning. There is no EPS fault light showing except during troubleshooting when I had the fuse out and on replacing the fuse and performing steering lock "reset procedure" the light clears.
I did have the relay (ST in box, I assume thats the steering relay) out the other day when fixing my low beams(both went at the same time, strange).
The lack of indicator light and still some power assist function suggests to me a setting off or a mechanical probelm perhaps? However with the fuse pullled the steering seemed smooth as best one can tell when its heavy.
Any suggestions would be much appreciate!
Also I saw one thread where the steering lock was at issue, this doesnt appear to be the case as it is working normal with key off.

Sounds like maybe one of your U-joints. Check out this thread here. Not a common problem, but I ran into it. https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-yourself-forum-73/diy-lower-steering-shaft-u-joint-replacement-217115/

Thanks a ton, exactly the kinda experience I was hoping to luck into. Not to mention the DIY, excellent stuff.
I was thinking alone those lines, its always nice hear its something that's happened before prior to dissassembly though. Once home will try the lubing, makes sense though as it seemed to start after cranking wheels back and forth to do the lowbeans through fender liners.
Thanks again.

The lubricating helped ever so slightly, but did cause it to make a noise correlating to the binding which helped confirm the issue but also made it more disconcerting. New u-joint should be in tommorow anyway then that write up should save me at least a couple hours of frustration with the change out, and hopefully should be able to get it right on the first go round with some markings.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Done, driving is enjoy-able again. Performed almost all work with steering at full left lock which had the bolts up right. Snapped a few cell pictures at lock of ,wheel, steering wheel, u joint, and marks I put on steering intermediate shaft to upper part of u joint before starting, immensely help in getting it lined back up first go on reassembly.
