Auto Transmission Jerking!!

I have a 2005 4-speed auto rx8. I am experiencing a lot of transmission jerk. It usually happens when I'm going between 40-55 km/hr in 3rd or 4th gear. When I am in that range of speed and lift off the gas and then accelerate again it almost always jerks.

Any ideas?

Put it in Manual mode and shift it at 5000 rpm like I do. Try keeping the car in the torque curve. 3000 to 5000 rpm in each of the gears.

Ya, still does it when its warm. It doesn't matter how long I've been driving it.

What are your RPM's when this occurs? And are you just trying to cruise?

I would like to say part of that is possibly normal. If you are switching the gears in manual mode and cruising while doing it (2-3 for example) it will jerk a bit because it is not in the tourque curve but if you press down on the pedal harder it will easily move through the gear without jerking. If you want to try then start in first gear and start driving and shift up into second gear at around 3/4000 rpm but let of the gas when you shift a bit and press down again kind of slow/normal, it will jerk a few times but lightly, which is normal. Same thing in AUTO mode kind of. When you are driving in auto and it shifts up to fourth gear pretty fast lol. Cruise around in auto mode and let of the gas a little as you normally would when just cruising and hit the throttle again but not hard it can possibly jerk as well. Notice if you simply hold the gas down, while shifting through all the gears in manual mode at about 5000 rpm the car will not jerk and also if you let of the throttle a bit while shifting and then get back on it until it hits 5000 rpm and then shift, it will not jerk and will actually sound like a manual car would.

It would be easier to explain if I were to drive with you lol.

I know this question is not for me but I have a strong feeling that the jerks are just little and repetitive when only cruising and barely hitting the throttle because this happens in my car as well and some one else I know but when, kind of on the throttle it will not jerk. I think the jerking is nothing major but maybe the tranny is messed up lol, my car has well over 90,000 miles on it.

Never mind, I don't think it is the tranny I think it is normal. I realized how many times I took the car in just to get looked at for my own preference but everytime I took it to any dealer or shop, they would say nothing was wrong so yup, my car has well over 90,000 miles on it and has never had any issues yet. He should be fine IMO....... Unless the car is doing other things we don't know about.

Sounds to me like it's the converter clutch engaging and disengaging. You are in too high of a gear for that speed. Try the manual shifting mode as recommended above.

You can replace the tranny fluid. Helped with the jerking in my 8. Like stated above, it just depends what rpm's you are at when you shift. When I'm WOT I never notice a jerk. Guess you will just have to drive WOT all the time

Tranny fluid does help but I can almost guarantee that the AUTO 8's all have this "issue". It seems normal but like I said if you put your foot down on the pedal a little more when going through the gears, there will not be a jerk. I also forgot to mention that you don't have to shift at 5,000 rpm (did it today and it seemed to high when just cruising IMO) BUT TRY 3000-4000 RPM.

It seems to happen only within the 1500-2000 RPM range.

Messed around with it last night. In 1st gear at about 4.5k rpm I get a jerk when shifting to 2nd. However, if I take my foot off the gas then shift, there is no jerk. I dont mind the jerk, but my passengers/girl friend look like a bobble head I'm mainly trying to make her happy or **** her off. Depends on the mood.

EDIT: Dont need to fully take your foot off the gas. I would say maybe about half of what you are currently applying. This is a guess and test type of thing. Find something that works for you even if that means REDLIN REDLINE REDLINE

That is what I was trying to say earlier, lol. Now that I think about it, when driving the auto, even shifting at 2500-3500 there should be a little jerking when barely pressing the throttle and when you let off the gas and press on it a little harder it shifts like a MT 8 would sort of.
