BHR coil/wire failure

just to clarify, the symptoms are dependent on how the coil and/or wire are failing, which position it's in (L vs T), the overall condition of the engine, and whether or not there are other non-ignition issues as well
too further complicate the scenario a lot of the same symptoms can be generated by other issues with there being nothing being wrong with the ignition system
it's not really a simple xyz format as stated above, but more an elimination process

I (and another person here in NZ) have a very similar issue and we are looking for solutions .
D585 coils - not BHR ignition though .

I don't want to knock the BHR Coils, and Ray has always been great but.....
I've always had hard start issues with the BHR coils. PRE and POST Turbo.
I actually got to the point where I was taking off the bhr coils and putting the OEM coils back immediately to see if the problem persisted. I literally changed coils 4 times in one day. OEM Coils always started up right away.
Hardly scientific I know but while I was running nitrous I removed the bhr coils and ran with the OEM's which resolved my start issues. Hot or Cold.

/\ same experience here . Put OEMS back on - perfect . Then D585 back on and startup is poor .
Two of us changed over coils simultaneously and had exactly the same result .
Have worked out what I think will solve the issue today (with help from Rotaman) and initial results are good but it needs more testing .

I just sanded the fender grounding point a bit more...
I reckon the BHR instructions didn't mention the battery negative as a grounding point either. It's been some time though.

The wiring loom I used uses a smaller gauge wire (1mm diameter) for the earth wires than the BHR (i think) so may be more prone to this issue .
But we tried several earth locations with no success before reverting to the above remedy .
After yesterday ,which involved lots of hot starting , I'm pretty sure the issue is resolved .
Edit : nope not fixed .

Any reported issues we have had regarding starting issues usually have been the result of poor engine compression. Have any of you confirmed your engine compression is good via a test?

But this was not the issue here (unless my compression magically improved while swapping coils back to OEM) and if other users have reported worse starting after fitting your coils then maybe you need to look a bit deeper .

That's a non-issue you're talking about Brett. You also stated to use a thinner ground wire so that makes your reference point different.
The issue may easily be a weak battery too for most users with good compression.

Maybe - but the symptoms described by the OP (BHR coils) were pretty much exactly what we experienced here . Would be interested to hear more from WCS as it sounds like he had the same thing as well.
Low compression or not , the point is starting performance was not the same or better but .................................worse .

D585 coils can and do fail or fall off in performance (wires too). There is no need to keep swapping them out. How many times do I have to explain how you can check them?
The ground is critical. IMO you are best served taking it to the negative battery post. The longer the length, the larger the wire needed.
You can be assured that if it is a BHR product and there is an issue with it that it will be taken care of promptly.
And I was attempting to post the link that allows you to pull up all the OPs posting history as she probably mentioned it elsewhere. Team-fail.

^^^ Me too
I'm at the Airport now. Flight departs from LHR to YYZ at noon local time.
Once I'm over the jet lag I will try the recommendations here as well as buy the HEI Ignition testing device Team recommends.
I'll also do a compression test for Flashwing and I won't be surprised to find that I might be on the low side.
Unfortunately I have nothing to compare this against when I first purchased the coils several years ago.
Anyways, I don't want to get in a pissing match over any of this.
Rays has always been great to me.
When I saw Brettus having a similar issue that I have discussed both with Ray and Jeff, I didn't think it would cause any hard feelings if I mentioned that I had experienced that same thing.

Basically, I still haven’t completely solved the issue…My coils, wires, plugs, and battery are all fine…I just installed an upgraded starter this past weekend, and that helped my starting an incredible amount, but I’m still hearing what sounds like a misfire…My car starts within about 1 to 2 seconds now (it was taking about 5 or 6 seconds), but like I said, I’m still hearing that odd sound upon starting…I even had a compression test done…All is good.
Other than that, the only new issue I’m experiencing is with my power steering (which starter after my starting issue)…and only in the mornings when I first start my car…If you want more details, I have a thread about it…Go find it.
After failing to find what is causing both issues on my own, I decided to suck it up and go to a dealership again……Nothing.
You think they’d at least make something up and try to get me to spend money…..Nope….They say he’s perfectly fine….Which obviously isn’t right, but whatever…I’ll just wait for whatever it is to go incredibly wrong, then it’ll be obvious.
