wow sounds exactely like what happened to me. Car just died, lights and acc would turn on, but all that would happen when i cranked it was just a click and nothing else. Motor wouldnt turn over, and there was a slight whine... I swore it was the battery or starter, but I had it towed to Mazda anyway. Engine was fried, seized rotors....dont know, good luck..

well, it looks like im getting a new motor. i spoke to the service department and my tech-guy told me that the rear rotor had ZERO compression...a weird problem, yes. anyways, he told me that he had direct orders to tell me that Mazda Tech didn't really want to authorize a reman for me, but "since i had the car serviced at the dealer they would allow it this time." I told him "legally they would have nothing against me, and nor would they want to take the money and effort into researching what caused the problem, but i appreciate their 'making an exception' for me." he told me that he very much agreed with me: Mazda Tech would have nothing against me in court. Thus, a reman will be running in my car next wednesday.... maybe I should go try and get some pics of my car before install...?

Odd that they are just throwing in a reman motor instead of diagnosing. Zero compression implies that the engine wasn't turning over at all, in which case why say that they did the check? Something odd going on.
Good that they are doing that for you, but I would be much more inclined to believe the issue is in the electrical or fuel delivery, but my bet would be on the starter/ignition side of things, even if just a frayed/shorted wire no one is seeing.

Thats crazy..same deal with mine a few months ago. No compression in one rotor (they guessed it was seized) out of nowhere. The tech said hes been working with rotaries for years and never saw that happen. Thanks god for the warrenty huh..they werent going to give me a new one, because I didnt have all my records for oil changes, but it finally worked out.
Maybe that CF gas cover I sold you awhile ago has bad mojo or something.....

So you get your car back in 2 weeks from the day you dropped it off? Lucky. Mine took about a month since it took a week just to find the problem. Make sure you do what people have previously said and check the oil level every day for about a week to make sure it isn't leaking. I had my oil changed a month ago and found that the oil pan gasket was put on poorly and split partially. There is a very small leak, but it is getting fixed on Monday. I didn't follow this advice too closely when I got my car back because I thought everything was fine. The dealer gave me no problems with mods since I have a bodykit, wheels, exhaust and Mazdaspeed intake. I am friendly with the service manager and he knows I do all the maintainance on time so they didn't give me problems with getting a new engine. Don't worry about re-mans. Before, I felt the same way you did, but now I am glad to have it since it runs great with no problems and my car is the most powerful it has ever been even more than when I bought it used 2 years ago with low mileage. ^^ you mean the gasket material was thin. there are no oil pan gaskets, just rtv.
it doesnt make sense that there is zero compression, even the worse damaged rotor will still make a very small amount of compression its the law of physics.
I have a bad feeling that they are testing wrong, assuming its the motor, and not diagnosing the real problem. Definitely take pictures of EVERYTHING and document all phone conversations and or emails whatever.
You wanna keep proof that they claimed the ZERO compression and all else they claim so when something else happens or the same thing happens, you know you are covered because it was their idea and claims, not yours.
