I was wondering if anyone has suffered the same problem I have. My 8 started running rather poorly about a month ago. Two weeks ago it suffered an intermittent misfire and on my way home it leaked a huge amount of oil from somewhere. Still don't know why that happened though.

I parked the car and decided it was time to replace the engine. (Thankfully I have a spare engine ready.)

Well, yesterday I decided to do the exchange and removed the engine. Transplanting parts I've come across an SSV valve with a stripped gear and the piston had sheared off. It's a definite mechanical failure but after rebuilding a number of these engines for customers, it's the first time ever I've seen this particular failure.

Anyone has an idea why this could have happened?

Guys sorry. In my haste I didn't explain the failure properly. It was in fact a broken APV and not the SSV. I will upload pictures tonight. Oh, and the link to the APV sheared off. The gears are fine.
