FL Can you help me?

I have a 2007 rx8 with 45,000 miles on it, when I 1st start driving it runs fine. After about 20 mins when ever I start revving it higher it acts like it is running out of gas. (The rpms drop with my pedal too the floor) I can usually pop in into another gear too keep the engine running but today it completely shut down. I wait a couple mins and then turn in back on, start drving and eventually it does it again. I took it too mazda and had them do a scan on it and it came back with nothing just a few miss fires he says. The situation happens a lot faster if I use the air conditioner. Any clues as too what might have caused this? Ive searched the forums for someone with the same problem but nothing like this exactly.

Thanks in advance

Zack

sounds like your fuel pump could be going.
It's a tough one to diagnose because it usually does not throw a CEL code so when the dealership scans for codes, nothing comes up.

if it's a fuel pump, it should be covered under warranty. The problem is getting the car to replicate the issue when it's at the dealership.

Maybe it's a clogged catalytic converter?
any check engine light at all? (do any lights blink on your dash?)

Im pretty sure i can replicate it, if im driving lol maybe one of the techs can ride with me. No not any lights, the coolant light flash for a quick second then went away but I was low on coolant so I put more in. Other than that nothing else, I mean usually I can revv it all the up when im first start driving it but after a little bit it starts giving me problems.

don't rev the engine too much when it's cold, not good for the car.

Where in Florida?
Could be CAT
Could be fuel pump

Jorge, did you notice that they did get misfire codes when they scanned it?
I hate to say it and may get some grief from certain people around here, but it could be coils....he's got 45k miles.

When was the last time the plugs were changed?
How's about the coils?
Are you the first owner?

I completely missed the part about the misfire codes.
I too think you should look into the coils. Start there since it's a fairly easy inspection and not too expensive to replace.

i had the same thing happend and it ended up being a screen in my cold air intake that had turn sideways up against my maf sensor.......i would describe it as going WOT then turning the key off while still WOT.....do u have a stock intake system if so try and cleaning out ur sensor. where in fl are you located ?

edit i also thought it was my coils before i found out what it was, but i replaced them and it kept doing it

I live in Orlando Florida, its hott! I have never replaced my coils. They mazda guy told me my spark plugs were fine but I have two extra ones I can go ahead and replace. (Never replaced them) I am the 1st owner. The reason im thinking its the fuel pump, is because I did run out of gas once.

This is an 07..........so are you still in warranty since you are the original owner?

Well, it could be the fuel pump, but I just don't think so. You had misfires and our OEM coils are somewhat known as a weak spot. They don't seem to last much over 35k, but there are some of course that do. A lot of us do not run OEM coils.
You've got 45k on the plugs and coils. To me.........that's a long time in this car.
So, if you are going to start with the plugs, you do know that the leading and trailing plugs are different right?
DO NOT put them in the wrong place.

If you want to test the coils and know how to use a meter, see the attached.

I mean seriously, this could be a lot of things, so it best to start with the cheaper, easier things. Since the mechanic said the plugs were okay. I'd move on to the coils as the next thing. Even in a worse case scenerio where you end up needing a new engine, they will put new plugs and coils in before doing the compression check.

True, but as you know...gotta start simple and it's awful hard to debug at a distance..... which you are also well aware of.
Getting all the info is yet another hurdle, but was hoping maybe a coil would show up to be real bad....ya know?

Actually, in this case, I'm thinking it might still be under warranty, so why not take it in?

I would send him your way of course for the BHR ignition, but gotta see what can be found out first.

Alright cool, so ill check the coils 1st. Even weirder thing is, I disconnected the battery for about 20 mins. I drove it around after that and I could rev it high with no problems. Then I drove too burger king and sat in the parking lot eating with the ac on. It started doing it again right after that just not as bad. The car did sit for about 5 months straight because I had some issues with my license at the time (with little gas in it) I did start it up about every couple days or so. (eventually the battery died and I had too jump start it which is the reason why I disconnected the battery, might of been a computer issue I dont know) One more thing my bumper too bumper warranty was 36000 I think and my Power train is 65000. Will that still be under warranty? I might be mistaken though ill have too look.
