Car losing power for brief periods?

Today while coming in to work, I was sitting at a red light and I decided I have had enough of the song playing on my iPod. I have one of the Gromm units installed so I can actually keep it charged while playing. I clicked the next button on my steering wheel and instantly had my car power down. By power down though...the car remained running, but all of my dash lights went off and I lost my power steering.

I've been looking around on the forums before I posted a new thread...but I cannot seem to find anything that is even remotely close to what happened.

Thoughts? Ideas? What should I be checking for?

Thanks!

Check fuses. It sounds like either the steering wheel grounded when you pressed the button or the Gromm unit died and popped a fuse.

Very strange.

I had checked for any fuse that would've blown and found nothing..I also checked the connection on the Gromm unit to the back of the stereo and nothing seemed out of place. All of my electronics and such are working normally now....maybe just a freak short?

Sounds like an intermittent short/ground, possibly taking out the CAN Bus (just wild speculation). If it happens again and you can pin down how/when it happens then troubleshooting can move forward.

Well it's happened again..my car actually shut off this time..I came to a stop at a light..and the whole car shut right off and then the gauges made a pass like when you originally turn the key to accessory.

This time I was lucky enough at least recall exactly what I was doing. I reached for my ipod that is hooked through my grom unit. The second I bent the chord coming out of my center console..the whole car shut down. I fired it back up with no problems and puled into a newar by lot to check my theory. Pulled into the lot, stopped the car, moved the chord and it shut down again....how the hell is this possible seeing the grom only hooks through the back of the radio unit?

Sounds like the Grom unit is shorting. The Grom unit is powered by the radio through the port on the back, and the radio is connected to at least half the dash stuff and the ECU through CAN. Fix the cord and then keep on trucking.

Do you know if this is a chord I can splice and be able to repair easily?

Sounds like it happens right where it comes out of the center console so there is probably a gouge in the wire there and bare wire showing, if so then you know what to fix. Fix it then get some heat shrink and reinforce where it comes out of the dash. Should be fairly painless.

Or... Get a replacement cord and reinforce it with heat shrink before a new fault can happen. I see them for under $30 with a little googling. Since they are fairly cheap it's probably the better route.
