Car stalls when stopping.

Could it be the coils? its an 04 auto with 55k miles on it now. I do not know if there original or if they have been replaced. not every time, but alot of times when I come to a stop the car stalls, it wont start right back up. It takes about a minute then I can try and it will start again. Any clue what this could be?

Start easy? Plugs(?), maybe wires, then possibly coils, clean the MAF, then proceed from there.
Just some suggestions.............someone with more experience with this might chime in.

I have an 04 AT and had the same problem about 18 months ago, after about 12 trips to the dealer MNA finally replaced my engine. Usually the only way I could restart the car was to do a flooded engine start. About a month later they released a bulliton that described the problem that I was having to a t and to repace engines when found. Basically a lot 04 ATs have problems with stalling in warm/hot temps with A/C on. Since I had it done the car has and is still running like a new car. Had the engine replace at 27k and now have 39k.

Get the car to a dealer NOW before your extended warranty runs out! The '04 autos have had an unusually high incidence of engine failures--especially in hot climates. My guess is you'll be looking at an engine replacement. Just a guess mind you, but if you wait to have it "officially"checked out, you may be looking at an engine replacement at your expense $$$$.

i still have some of the powertrain warrenty (55k miles). I guess ill get it in there asap. So what if they check it out and find it to be something that is not coverd? am I expected to pay for there work or do they just write it off under warrenty?

Yes, indeed! Do it soon.

Well, if it's not covered under warranty, then it's obviously your cost. However, with the symptom you describe, I suspect they will find an engine failure which is still covered by the extended warranty until 60K. If you wait until the warranty expires and it turns out to be a failed engine, plan on spending several thousand dollars for an engine replacement.

Just be aware, though, that some service departments will try to weasel out of honoring a warranty, so don't automatically accept what they tell you if it doesn't make sense. You can always talk with Mazda corporate directly if you suspect that the dealer is trying to screw you. The Mazda customer service can be reached at the 800 number in your owners manual. Good luck!

Alright thanks for the advice. I sure hope its a new motor, couldnt be better timing. 5k before end of warrenty . Luckily the car only sees 5ish miles a day on weekdays and then whatever we decide to do on the weekend. 5k should take us a little while. Its going in monday at 7am. I will post updates as I hear them.

Unfortunately, 5 miles per day is not good for this car. The engine hardly gets fully warmed up in that distance and this engine needs to get hot and to approach the redline frequently. So your problem may be related to the short daily mileage--like fouled plugs, carbon buildup, etc. I hope the service guys can get to the bottom of your problem and that they give you an honest evaluation.

Yes, do let us know the outcome.

it just recently started driving that little and this problem happened like 2 months ago, they replaced the cat and plugs claiming that was the issue (the originally told me that the motor needed replaced and then they said it was just the cat). I guess it wasn't the cat if the problem is coming back so soon. It was driving about 45 minutes each way to work until a few weeks ago. It does see a red line a day though . Being in Florida the thing is warmed up before I even get out of my neighborhood so i would be surprised if that has much to do with it.

Tim,

I just helped another forum member and we had worked our way to the MAF and he was attempting to clean it when he found was that one of the screens on the intake had moved and was kinda in there slanted and that was messing up the airflow. He appeared to be stallimg much like you...............it's worth a shot.

There have been 3 members in the last month that brought their car in for stalling and it was the intake disconnected or loose.

Start simple work up to big.

ill go out and check all the intake. I havent touched it though so i would find it wierd to be lose. Worth a shot though. Im scared to take it in to the dealer and it be something not coverd or them not find anything and try to charge me a stupid amount for looking at it... Its only got the powertrain warrenty left.

checked the intake, everything is tight and connected very good. Im guessing thats not going to be the problem.

For those of you that have some knowledge, what are the odds of this being my motor vs coils or something. I really dont want to take it in unless there is a good chance of it being a bad motor or something (as far as i know this is the original motor)

Apparently you purchased this car used? If so, do yourself a favor and call the Mazda Customer Service 800 number in your owners manual tomorrow, provide them with the VIN and ask them if ALL the recalls have been done on the car. Ask especially about the 4206F recall. It won't cost you anything to get this information, and if the 4206F recall has not been done, have it done immediately. This is a critical recall, it is done free and, if done correctly by the dealer, it will reveal the health of your engine.

If you want to know what the 4206F recall was all about, do a search of the forum for that number and read some of the threads.

Edit: Here's one thread:

I did have to take the car in a few weeks ago when they replaced the cat and spark plugs for this issue. I would assume that they would check this issue while it was there? Its going in tomorrow morning so I will ask them about ti when I go and see from there.

Bring it back. They will give you new coils, then if that don't work you may get a new engine.

But before you do this, drive it a few days, unless you have already done that.

An ECU rest will cause the car to stall until the the car re-learns.

Still hard to believe its the coils as your symptom only occurs when you stop it.

just an FYI

anyone in tampa,fl. DO NOT take your car to ferman mazda on florida avenue. They have THE worst customer service I have ever had with a dealer.

Not to mention they are charging me 70 bucks to reflash the ecu and clean the throttle body claiming that is the issue.

^^ they did those re flashes today. he said they did a few, one for the lack of power and then something else, couldn't remember them. They said my throttle body had alot of build up in it, I need to drive my car harder. I laughed at him, I live by the red line a day motto.
