CEL/Misfire
My 04 RX8 is still flashing the random multiple misfire CEL I have changed the plugs and coils 20K ago but I am changing them again for my next tuneup and checking the wires, my question is has anyone had the same problem and has anyone ever changed the crank postion sensor ( will it affect it )
Basically I changed to the Agency under drive pulley 30-40K ago thats when I first got the light and was told that mazda made it very sensitive thats why I got the CEL.
Is it possible to put the crankshaft timing plate behind the pulley on backwards I dont think it is but just checking and can this plate go bad?
I have put the factory pulley back on and still have the CEL, I have cleared the code several times and driven the car over 100 miles (Car runs great) my problem is that I need to get it smogged soon (California BS)
Please if any of you have had this problem or heard of it let me know.
Thanks
Steve

Its not possible to have the plate on wrong. There is only one way it will line up on the shaft and the bolts go in. However, it could be bent, but if it was bent it would misfire all the time and run really rough even if it would run at all. I dont think the pully, plate, or sensor is your issue. Not sure what it is. Could be the plugs since they are 20k old. I would get those swapped out as you suggested. It would be a good place to start.

I finally got the car fixed and the CEL was caused by low compression in both rotors but the lucky part is that it was covered under Mazdas extended engine warranty (8years 100K miles) If I didnt need a smog check I never would have known and would have went over the mileage because the car ran fine (weird huh)
So anyone who has a multiple engine misfire CEL 0300 or 0301 and has done evertything i.e. plugs, coils etc get a compression check and you may get a new (rebuilt) engine too.
Thanks to all for your help.
