Check Engine Light - 35xxx Miles
Check engine light just came on, I am on a mini vacation 550 miles from my hometown and was wondering what it could be?
I purchased the 04 rx8 with 301xx miles on it and its been running like a champ and still is, but check engine light came on yesterday and I was wondering if its anything serious?
As I bought it from a private owner is it still under warranty? I am still new with cars this being my second. If not what could this cost me to just even take a look at, and possibly fix if its anything bad?
Thanks again, if this warrants it, feel free to flame on.
Thanks
-Josh

josh:
find a local auto zone and have the code pulled; most of them will do it for free in hopes you buy the replacement parts from them.
did you fill up recently? could be a loose gas cap.
Did the CEL blink or is it just solid?
it could be one of a million things so getting the code pulled is your first (and best) start.
once you have the code pulled, let us know and we can help you resolve the issue.

I don't believe there is power loss, but I havent pushed it, its solid CEL the whole time the car is on
well i'll check the gas cap, and if that doesn't do it ill have the code pulled and post up the info.
Thanks guys

Got the code pulled P0455
Definition: EVAP control system leak detected - large leak
Probable Cause:
1: Faulty Fuel Cap
2: Canister Faulty
3: Purge Valve solenoid faulty
4: Damaged/Leaking EVAP hose
5: Faulty EVAP leak detection pump
-------------------------------------------------
With that, is this covered under warrant if I take it to mazda @ 351xx miles / bought from individual at 31xxx miles?
I took it to a service center and the guy said that he will reset it and if it was just the fuel cap the CEL light will go away either after 2 start cycles or after a certain amount of miles, he said if not then bring it back and a full diag will cost 90 something, problem is I have to leave TODAY and drive 550+ miles
With that, will I be able to make it? I saw a leak in the center of the undercarriage, like I said im not too big on cars yet, im still learning and he said that a fuel cap could cause a leak like that from the emission system.
Any help is appreciated, thank you

It appears to be just a loose gas cap (the most common CEL). Have Autozone clear it, or it will self-clear after 3-4 starts. I click my cap a half-dozen times now after having done similar way back when.
Enjoy the rest of your vacation!
