check engine light fuse!

hey guys,

i have always had this uneasy feeling that the private dealer i bought my 8 from removed the fuse for the check engine light; after i complained the it was on, when i bought the car. i notice that when my ignition is on, the little motor sign doesn't come on. i need to know if they did rip me off because she is going in for a compression test soon.

There is no separate fuse for the CEL... you'll loose the whole instrument cluster and more if it was a fuse.
Its possible they actually fixed the problem or they cleared the code and it never returned.
If you really want to see if there is a "hidden code", take it to Autozone and have them hook a code reader to the OBD-II port to scan for anything.

How long have you owned the car? Did you get the car inspected by a mechanic?
If you're doubting your car, you should probably get an inspection at a mazda dealer.

I can't see the video here but yes it is normal for a number of lights to illuminate when you turn the ignition to on. It's a self check of systems and the status lights themselves. Your owner's manual discusses same.

Keep in mind that a CEL can be as simple as a loose gascap to something more serious like an O2 sensor. Hence the need to scan for a specific code. As Mazda did so and didn't report any faults then stop worrying and enjoy your '8.

ref: Check Engine Light
If this light comes on while driving, the
vehicle may have a problem. It is
important to note the driving conditions
when the light came on and consult an
Authorized Mazda Dealer.
The check engine light may come on in
the following cases:
-The fuel tank level being very low or
approaching empty.
-The engine's electrical system has a
problem.
-The emission control system has a
problem.
-The fuel-filler cap is missing or not
tightened securely.
If the check engine light remains on or
flashes continuously, do not drive at high
speeds and consult an Authorized Mazda
Dealer as soon as possible.
