Check engine warning light

Check engine warning light
I have searched all the threads I can, but can not find any that are perhaps specific to my current problem.
1. I have been experiencing problems with my audio system.
2. Today the check engine warning light came on. I read the manual and discovered that there are a number of possible reasons for this. I was running really low on fuel, but made it to the services and filled my tank. Interestingly I read that this light could be activated if the fuel was left to run low or if the fuel cap was not secured.
My question is.... If this was the problem, would the warning light go off automatically or do I have to reset it?
Reading advice on how to restet there appear to be numerous threads offering advice. What is the best method to reset?
I was going to take the car to the dealership, but friends have advised me not to but to try a reset initially.
A stupid question..... But is there anyway that the problem with the audio system is in some way contributing to this problem?
Hopefully, it will be the fuel issue and look forward to any advice/suggestions.

You are going to have to provide more detail on "problems with your audio system". Most audio issues have nothing to do with the engine, but there are a few ways electrical gremlins can cause both.
Your friends are right, usually a dealer is the worst option. I am on my phone and cant see location, but am guessing from the terminology used that you are not in the US. Do they had free code reader services at any autoparts stores there? Worst case, buying a code reader is about the same to twice the price of a dealer diagnostic, but without the wait, and you have a reader for the future.
Get the code and get back to us. It could be anything from a loose gas cap to complete engine failure. Wont know without the code

I'm located in the North West of England. Liverpool to be exact.
Problem with the audio system..... At times no sounds from speakers. All controls on head unit and steering wheel appear fine adjusts volume etc, however, no sound. Then it kicks in and everything seems fine. Had it in to Mazda, they could not detect a problem.
Bad idea just to reset? I will take it to my friend tomorrow and hopefully get a code.
THANKS

No, resetting is never a terrible idea. If the issue is a persistent one, then it will return and be just where it was. If it was temporary, such as the gas cap, it won't return and you will be find.
Let us know though.
