Possible abatement of gear turnover noise
Hello all... just my two cents to add to the conversation.
My car has the gear turnover noise. This is simply the noise of unloaded gears in neutral.
I noticed that when the stick is pushed down vertically (as if you are about to shift into reverse), the sound diminishes about 80%. You might notice this in your car also.
My mechanically ignorant theory is that the stick makes some sort of indirect positive contact at or near the car chassis when released, and breaks this contact when pushed down vertically.
IF this is true it would mean that the tranny sound is being transmitted through the stick to the chassis, thereby making it louder in the cabin.
If someone cares to look into it, I bet that buffering/ repairing/ replacing the point of contact between the chassis and the stick Will cut back significantly on tranny noise transmitted to the cabin.
Thoughts?

Try it our on your '8 and see if it does the same for you.

i have had it apart several times. the stick is not contacting the chassis but it does play a role in transmitting the noise to the cabin. when you push it , it vibrates less and most is absorbed by your hand

Does the stick telescope? If it does, I wonder if getting a new assembly would correct the problem... assuming that the noise transmission results from normal wear and tear to the stick's internal components.
Anyway... not that big a deal. Just interesting to note that the stick transmits quite a bit of gear noise to the cabin.

Hey, I'm just wondering if you still have this problem or got to it fix. I actually have the same problem qith my 8 but I just recently bought a used tranny and new o TB.. going to install it this weekend but if you have another cheap ways of fixing the noise give me a hit because I don't mind returning the parts back haha

I had the same problem on my 2004 mitsu lanxer ralliart back in the day.. I spent a new clutch kit and didn't fix the noise so the mechanic said its internal problem.. I just recently put a new engine on my 8 a month ago built by rx7 specialist here in calgary new flywheel and cluth kit on it. Still making the same noise. Grinding noise that goes with the rpm when clutch is released. I had it flushed and replaced ams 75w90 syn.. it seems like didn't do anything and I noticed switching from 3rd to 4th gear at 6k rpm or higher when engine is harm enough it grinds so i had to pause for a sec and it goes.. ams messed up th syncro lol since I bought a used recertified tranny what should I put on it? Redline mt90? Or royal purp max gear?

Ok, just bought my 8 used in May and recently as in the past week, I am having the same squeaking sounds as well when I have the clutch engaged. Is there a DIY on how to fix that? Can I go to the dealership? I have an 04 8 with 80k miles.
It also squeaks when I'm driving, but I don't think from the clutch. It squeaks when I do high rpms as well but only after I've been driving 15+ minutes.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm a noob to cars in general and I've been boning up on how everything works this past summer/early fall but the more I know, the more I realize I don't know.

After much reading. My issue seems similar.

Hi all, I thought I'd chime in here with my experience:
I was encountering this same squeaking sound.
For reference, 2008 RX8 At 92K
It started off only happening once in awhile and would disappear for a few days every week or so.
The sound slowly became more frequent and occasionally it would be joined by a higher pitch continuous squeal for seconds at a time. It was worst when the weather was cold.
After the car was warmed up and driven a bit, the sound would go away consistently only to return the next day.
It finally got to be more than I could bear 3 days ago and I had the local shop replace the throwout bearing and clutch.
I supplied them with the MZK1002 kit from Amazon.
After all the labor and flywheel resurfacing my bill was $440.
Iam happy to report that this seems to have completely fixed the problem!
The old TOB is coated solidly with what appears to be fibers generated from the wearing down of the friction plate. I would hypothesize that the open sides of the OEM throw-out bearing allowed these tiny fibers to slowly work their way into the bearings causing wear and fouling of the grease. The bearing is noticeably difficult to turn and has inconsistent resistance.
So, at least in my case, the sound was caused by a dying TOB rubbing up against the spring-plate.
P.S. Man the new clutch feels really excellent. I didn't even know what I was missing.

Nice photos. That TOB looks really gnarly with the whiskers sticking out.
Mine (05' Shinka) has always made some ballsy kinds of noise sitting there in neutral, and pedal out. But seemed fairly normal. Yesterday morning it was pretty cold around 34 degrees. When started, I noticed for the first time (66,000 mi) a sort of loud whining/screeching in the same condition (pedal out). Seemed to go away more with pressure on the pedal. Also seemed to go away when warmed up. I'll bet it is the same problem you are showing / describing here.

Different issues, but ties in
So I originally was looking for a thread to deal with a jumpy idle when starting it on a cold morning, but I saw this thread cause I have the same issue and it could be related to the issue I'm having at idle. I only say this because, when my clutch is not pressed in the engine idle bounces around between 1k and 2k, but when the clutch is pressed in it idles normally, at start up. When I have the clutch pressed in and begin to let off, right around where it's fully engaged, the can feel the motor wanting to idle weird.
I've had this problem before during the cold seasons, but it would go away after doing the quick mazda warm routine, where you hold it at 3k for 7-10 seconds. I would do that and it would resume to idle normally to allow it to warm up properly. But these past couple of days it been fighting me. It goes away when the car is warmed up, but now it isn't warming properly, I think. I've noticed the temp gauge hasn't been nudging until it's warmed up completely and needle kinda just flicks over to operating temp. I know this gauge already isn't accurate, but until the needle hits the first incremental line the engine will continue to idle funny and takes about the usual time needed to warm up.
So I could have a whole plethora of problems, and I've been lagging on taking care of some of these issues, which I feel bad for, but I wanted to seek some insight on the situation before I tackled it.
As far as the noise with the clutch, when I had my TOB replaced the first time with me, the noise almost completely went away. But If I recall it was an aftermarket one, which could be the reason for wearing out again. I'll do as that one guy said and go with a factory TOB. Anyways if you had a similar problem or know the remedy for thses issues, I would appreciate your feedback.
