condensation on insulated A/C pipe?
Hey all,
I tried wrapping my a/c pipe in insulated tape to try to keep the cool in seeing how there is an issue with my a/c that I have to soon work out at a dealer. Today when i got in my garage i noticed an odd smell inside the cabin. it wasnt like burning oil or gas or something, something else.
Anyways i popped my hood to tighten my battery terminal and noticed that the part of the pipe that i didnt wrap (the part up against the firewall which i didnt wrap cause it is pretty tight there and i didnt want to damage the pipe) was soaked in condensation. Is that an issue? I wondered if it was because I lost the plastic cap off of the low pressure side valve there (where you would put freon in).
I wrapped it up with duct tape just to be on the safe side because I heard you didnt really need the cap. Maybe I should now get 1 =/.
Anyways, is that an issue or pretty common to get the condensation there? The tape seems to be holding in the area where i used it which is good news. Makes a tiny bit of difference. I just used this roll of plumbers insulating tape that my parents had left over lying around their house. Says it can withstand up to 200 degrees. I know it gets pretty hot under the hood, but I figured I'd give it a shot.
Anyways, thanks for any info. heres a pic. Hard to tell but theres a lot of condensation on that pipe.
Oh and on a side note. The reason why i mentioned the mild smell was just in case theres a chance freon could some how be getting inside the cabin because of the uncovered valve or something. Just wanted to make sure I had all of the info posted. Thanks!

u don't need the cap, the cap is there to protect the pin/needle in there. if nothing touches it basically it's not needed, it's just one of those "better than nothing" so called protection.
As for the pipe, yea it's normal to have condensation there if u don't warp it up. cuz that pipe will stay cold all the time (if ur ac is on) and if it's humid out there, hot air (inside engine bay) meets cold pipe = condensation.
