tl;dr

On a side note, is there a way to visibly determine what revision you have installed without resorting to taking the reservoir out? I assume I got the "M" revision back in the day (still no problems); what revision are they on now?

heh... spring cleaning here too it seems! I had all these great thread notification emails today and I get to the threads and they've all been cleaned!

In my defense he did tell me to take a wild guess. sorry guys.

I'm wondering if there's any relation to indicate water pump failure?
I changed a lot of things at once so I'll never know in my case, but it is a possibility. My water pump showed minute signs of leaking around the drive seal.

Don't be sorry.
I read the threads and I saw his response before it was deleted. He was way out of line. Guy is too thin skinned and thinks he knows more than he does.

A man's got to know his limitations.

If you think of the icon as being a Greek temple, a merry-go-round or a Rolls Royce grill, you can have a lot of fun making up stories for passengers who notice it.

Probably no more purpose than would be installing another unreliable sensor. Just a thought . What is the answer here?. If the dash gauge is as stated above use less and the coolant tank sensor is un reliable then what is the answer?, a third gauge?.

It is the FLOAT slowly sinking which is the issue with coolant dash light.

Since the final (last) modified float was introduce into production and as a parts replacement from May, 19,2009, it is somewhat early to announce If this latest and last modified float will do its job...without sinking with age.

So far 4 years to the day without issues.
I have yet to also hear of any MY2010 and 2011 RX-8's with coolant bottle issues.

Hi ASH8,
I have an 04. Would this float cause any problems to where it would warrant replacing as a preventive measure?
Thanks.

I would depend on whether or not your 04 has ever had it's coolant bottle with float renewed?

At a guess I would say yes, at another guess, if it is not the latest version then yes it will give issues in time, my late 2008 made RX-8 has slowly sunk.

Thank you.
I bought it last July from a dealer.
It was a trade-in from the original owner.
Got a carfax, but no other maintenance records.
I assume there wasn't a recall on it.
I read a post recently on listed recalls, but I don't remember if that was one.
Thanks again.

If you look here you will see a TSB on it, however, it has never been a RECALL.
Recalls are ONLY for safety related issues.

Unfortunately from the new Coolant Bottles I have, there is no way I can see 'a way of' physically identifying what Coolant Bottle you have IF it has been previously renewed, there were about 6 iterations over both RX-8 series...another member may have an idea.

IF you want the latest and greatest and last Coolant Bottle with latest float and sensor this is the OE Mazda part number, you re-use your existing Pressure Cap...this is also the best priced unit.

Thanks again.
I should have known about the safety part.
I thought about that afterwards.
I'm going to the dealer monday to pick up the RX-8 sunscreen, so I'll see if they have one.
Appreciate the help!

I recognized that the true purpose of the float is to slowly fail. This results in forcing the owner under the hood, at which time he will replace the water pump, hoses, belts, plugs, coils, and air filter. Unfortunately the assembly of pump and bottle costs as much as any of these.

But in fairness, it got the job done at about the right interval.

When replacing the coolant bottle, you also run the risk of breaking the nipple off the radiator, which are plastic and fragile, especially on older RX8's. If you break that, you'll need a new rad.

Original thread that I have on the subject. The first post has been pretty much updated by either Ash or myself as we went along the whole process. I believe it contains all info one could ever need on the subject.

Thanks for that. I started reading it. I have no issues yet, but it's definitely got my attention.
I will plan on flushing it soon.

Yep. my M8 ''Maz'' was/is the pioneer in this quest to find the truth..'''that he did not have sexual relations with that bottle'''!..JK

Seriously he put a lot of time and testing into this project...and was the one who first confirmed it was the float sinking and not the bi-metal reed switch.

Okay, I need to jump in on this thread.... I have an '04 rx8, having same issue with coolant light. Took it to Berge Mazda awhile back and was told it was just the sensor. Then last Thursday on my way to work, the temp gauge pinned to the right, I smelled anti-freeze, then the needle dropped all the way to the left. I pulled off the highway immediately, let the bitch cool down, then called my neighbor who showed up with 2 gallons of water. I waited a bit, then put water in it. She started up, but it was a little funky on start up, like cranked a bit slow. I chalked it up to the engine still being hot. She idled perfect, and had power. I drove her home and she was puking her guts again. At this point I figured it was the thermostat. The reason I figured this was she wasnt blowing coolant out of the tail pipes, nothing was leaking out of the rad.... Next morning I brought it to my mechanic and she was already puking again. I told him what I thought, and he agreed, so he put in a new therm. I went to pick the car up, and the mechanic was on a test drive. WHEN HE GOT BACK SHE WAS PUKING AGAIN. The owner said maybe they didn't burp the system enough, and there was an air pocket in there, so he said they would try it again. Same ****. So now he says my motor is shot. Does this sound legit? This is my first engine in this car, she has 74k. I have read about the issues, but like I said, there is no smoke out the tail, and no water in the oil. Please help. This is also my first rotary, so if I left out any pertinent info, please let me know.

Auto Meter Sport-Comp Digital Series Gauges 6348

This is what I bought and this is my answer. I already unplugged my coolant tank light and this little device will keep me in touch with my actual oil temperature. Done with the games of Mazda and the sh...y engineering that went into it. The gauge will do the trick.

um sweatr... you're using an oil temperature gauge to keep track of your water temp? I guess it's okay if you're working on horsehoes or hand grenades. Assume your water is any where +/- 25 degrees of oil.

This should work well up to the point something serious goes wrong.
