FL Crank Seal Leak, will Warranty cover it??

hi guys, hope you guys are well.

2005, 73K miles

well i took my car in today for an oil change

Stealership told me that "crank seal is leaking"

I did take a look under my car, and did see a couple (drops) of oil

Anyone had this issue, i did read on a google search but this guy had alot more issues than this. Plus he was out of warranty.

I know that Mazda gave us 8yrs/100k on the vehicle.

Close to $600 in repair. the part is cheap but labor is what killing it.

My question is has anyone had this problem before and was it covered under warranty?

- Merry Xmas

The 8yr / 100k is on the engine core, internals and components to replace the engine. If the engine doesn't fail a compression test, then you basically can't even attempt to submit a warranty claim for engine replacement.

Short answer, this repair is on you, warranty won't cover it. You would need to be under the 5yr 60,000 mile power train warranty to have a chance.

Being a 2005, if your car's original purchase date was before December 12th 2005, then your engine warranty is gone. Most 2005s are out of warranty at this point, the only exceptions being any that sat on dealers lots until 2006. If yours does still have some of the warranty left, it won't be much and I recommend getting a compression test for a "just in case".

"Crank seal" could be the front main seal (near front pulley) or the rear main seal (between the bellhousing and rear engine plate). Either seal is better left to a shop, as you can seriously damage your engine if you do it wrong.

The front requires you to stop the flywheel, and bust off a nut that's holding on the front pulley and is sealed with loctite (easy with a little heat).

The hardest part about replacing the rear is getting to it. I was lucky to be the in the market for a new clutch and flywheel at the time when mine went. Drop the transmission, remove the clutch and flywheel, then you can work on getting the seal out.
