If you go fast enough, the force from the wind will stop it. JK
I complained several months ago about the rattle. I figured they would lube it up. That seemed to work for a while on others I had with sunroofs. They called me and told me that the motor was not putting out enough torque (or something, can't exactly remember) and they ordered me a new one. Since they replaced it, it has been fine so far. Still some rattle when open, but I think that is normal with a spoiler type like we have.
NOTE***** When they replaced the motor the mechanic ran the crews in too far and they hit the roof and pushed two little nipples out. I did not notice it until I washed the car. So, if they replace your motor, look to see if you 8 now has two little **** about 4 or 5 inches behind the windshield.

With this repair though....does your sunroof make a loud "cracking" like sound when it first opens. Like when it is completely closed and you hit the button to open it......
This is new for mine after the repair.

Hey guys...I've recently had the joy of experiencing the rattling sunroof as well. I was wondering about the updated status of those who have had the repair done.
First and foremost, did it completely stop the rattle?
Second, i've heard about the loud cracking when it opens...i figured it to be the tightness of the new rails breaking in. However, has this loud cracking subsided or at least quieted down at all?
I'd appriciate any input on this one, as i'm starting to consider having this done. Small thing, but it's getting annoying quickly when the radios off.

mine got replaced a while back and it's rattle free. I think it did make slight noises at first but now they're gone.
OH, speaking of which...mine sounds like it needs to be lubricated; any suggestions on what to use?

white grease usually seems to work miracles in most of those type of spots. I'm pretty sure that the stock lubrication has to be something similar to that nature.
I'll be sure to check in on this post as more answer and after more have it performed. I'm leary of this TSB, but gosh dang, it's annoying.

Had this done about 6 weeks ago. TSB claims 2.7hrs - Mazda didn't give my car back for over 10 days.
Went in with rattles when open - white lithium grease aided this.
Came out with new sunroof and rattle free? Not so much.
Headliner has many dirt marks from the replacement.
A pillar trim was not positioned properly - since fixed
Dome light plastic trim gouged - replaced
Somehow my amplifier power cable hidden under the door sill trim was exposed.
There were a whole host of other issues with the service not related to the sunroof.
Word of warning - ALWAYS examine the condition of your car before going into the dealer - record any damage, odometer, etc.
Before taking the car off the lot - thoroughly examine the condition of the car. After you get off the lot it may be too late.
Observations of the new sunroof.
Closed - creaking and rattle that can be stopped by pressing up on the leading edge centre of the headliner. Was quiet before the "FIX"
This may be temperature dependant - haven't figured it out.
So a word of caution - you may end up with bigger problem(s), loss of use of your car, and a few hours to clean up careless dirt monkeys in your car.
I'll report on whether the OPEN RATTLE is gone when it warms up here.
I can't beleive MAZDA did so well in the TOP GEAR survey in the UK. I try to avoid the statanic evilness aka mazda dealer service at all costs.
I have never been dissapointed at the consistency of their ineptness. 4 dealers so far, and only 1 that I would like to go back to happens to be the furthest away.

I can now say that my new '07 RX8, thanks to Mazda, does not have this issue, and I now drive 30min PAST my old dealer to the new dealer that takes care of my service...couldn't be happier.

Just to clarify, the rattling noise everyone is complaining of has to do with the sunroof rails.
The snapping noise I am referring to was something totally different...it was the result of the dealer performing the sunroof rail repair incorrectly (and then saying it was normal, not realizing they put the roof in backwards). I do not think this is a common problem, and it was definately not done at the factory.
I guess the key point in the second part of my story is proof that Mazda has to do some serious improvement of it's dealer base. This particular dealer got caught red handed, making up a story about another "normal", but clearly obvious defect. Makes you wonder about everything else they claim is normal...

I got my rails installed per TSB on Thursday but the snow has precluded a test for now
In my garage I opened it and didn't hear any snapping sound. Also the looseness is gone and it feels solid.
With my old rails I could grab the sunroof panel when open and move it around to clearly demonstrate the clunking sound to the service people. Since they could never 'duplicate the problem' this turned out to be important. Now I'm looking forward to a warm day to try it out!

No dirt or damage here either...but I wouldn't be surprised. Mine was clean only because I very clearly stated that they better make sure it doesn't get dirty/damaged. But they threw that back in my face when they took 10 days to repair mine too...said they were being careful. In the end, the glass still ended up backwards so they can take 3 months and still not know what they are doing.

err...sounds like a hit or miss on customer service...status quo for mazda. I'm probably gonna be heading in to get this done pretty soon, although i might have to wait until the shake is a little worse before they agree it's a problem.
You can't really move and shake the sunroof yet with your hand. Were you guys able to before you got it done?
Mine just recently started making shaking sounds on very slight bumps.

I could easily move the drivers side of the sunroof back and forth and side to side about 1/4" with a nice clunk when in the full open position. The roof would also clunk in the vent position and would rattle and squeak in the closed position.
The service rep said that they couldn't hear any problem on a test drive! I dragged the guy over and demonstrated the problem to him. They took it in the next day to confirm the issue and then ordered the part. The next week it was installed. So three visits to fix it.

Update:
Brought back in the car for Sunroof Problems.
What are the problems?
1. Rattles When Closed as opposed to Open before replacement - nice tradeoff.
2. Clean the dirt marks on the headliner
3. Fix the black plastic piece in the FR corner they broke
4. Fix the bend on the right rail they damaged
5. Fix the scratch on the door they caused.
6. Adjust the Sunroof so that it is level - off by at least 5 degrees when tilted.
rockin - Question - does the FELT on the rail fix the rattle when closed?
Service has had the car for 2 full days and I don't know if I'll ever get it back.
The rattle is especially noticeable on sharp bumps like concrete expansion joints.
If you press on the headliner in the centre front, the noise goes away.
Let's see - rattle when open which is only 5% of the time, or rattle 95% of the time?
Which one will you choose?
Their current stance is - we tried everything we could, but can't get rid of the rattle so sorry.
Felt - possibly this is the cure-all.

I'm in the process of waiting until it gets unbearable. It's already probably 1/2 way there, and is now starting to rattle when moving, when NOT EVEN running over bumps now. with some of the negative input i've gotten about the repair, i've been a lil weary about letting them take the whole thing apart.

Stavesacre21 - You have a right to be concerned.
Update on my Issue - Brought the sunroof in because the rattle was unbearable when open:
Visit # 3 - 3 days of service did not fix the sunroof alignment issue. By day 3 I had not received a call from the dealer on the status, so I decided to pop in. I was told the car was just ready and they were going to call (sure). What was the result? They didn't fix the alignment issue like I had asked. They did manage to fix the scratch they caused from the last visit albeit not very well as there are clear circular burn marks in the paint from the buffer - I guess they used a standard grinder to polish it??
I spoke with the tech and showed him the issue - response "Ohhh..."
Brought the car in for another day to be fixed.
Another day of service - and I am happy to report - FIXED!!!
TSB claimes 2.7 hrs - how about 4 dealer visits totaling 19 days?
Visit #1 - 10 days
Visit #2 - 5 days
Visit #3 - 3 days
Visit #4 - 1 day
Every dealer visit was pre-scheduled. The knew exactly the work that was required.
I could not live with the rattle any longer - but I didn't expect the dealer to keep my car for 19 days.
Now I have to address the rattles in:
Passenger Door Trim
Front Centre Console
Front Centre speaker rattle
Rear Passenger trim rattle.
