If you follow the thread, you'll see that the last page has been about the TSB that's out to fix it. The question isn't can it be fixed, it's simply if it's worth taking in and letting a dealership grease-monkey take your roofline apart, and possibly do more bad then good.

Just got her home.

I must say that after all the negative feedback i've heard, i was very suprised to find nothing wrong, even after going over it all meticulously. No loud clanks, no scratches, no grease on the headliner. Nothing out of the ordinary.

However, to be fair, the sunroof makes a SLIGHTLY different sound when intially opening, and then right before closing. Best described as a very soft click.

However, more important then anything, NO MORE RATTLING! Anyone close to Lima Ohio whose looking to have this done, it's worth the drive...tech did a flawless job. Dropped the car off at 8AM and got the call to come get it at 4PM.

Just so everyone has a visual, the difference between the old and new rails is VERY slight...as a matter of fact, the only difference I could tell on the before and after pics was the round shape of the cam/pin.

For those wondering if you have the new cam/pins, the old one was a complete circle (as shown below), the new one is a circular shape with 2 flat tangets on each side. See for yourself!

Hmmm.... I noticed mine starting to rattle last week, it was 'skipping' when I opened it, figured it needed some grease. Today at a red light when the fan kicked in, I could hear the glass clicking against whatever.. the roof?
I just went to look, and the right side (if I'm sitting in it right side) isnt even in the rail! I tried to move it back in but it wont budge... not that I tried hard, I dont want to break it. I wonder why it would just pop out? Lots of grease in there, track looks okay, I havent been on any rough roads or hit any huge holes or anything..

LOL had sunroofs in all my cars, this is the first time I've ever had any issue...

Mine rattles, but only when it's "tilted" open. When it's "slid" open, partially or all the way, there's no rattle.

Anyone know if the TSB addresses that? 'Cause I can have it done at my next oil change, next week.

As far as I know new york, it's a one-stop-fixes-all kinda deal. As far as I could tell, any and all the problems that people seem to have been having with the sunroofs have ceased once they got the TSB done.

HOWEVER, some people have had problems with other things rattling due to shotty work from the dealer.

As long as you can gather up enough confidence to let the dealer rip your headliner out, it's a win-win in the end.

I did however, find out that he forgot to put the 3 pins in the back of the headliner 2 days ago. Not a big deal, and if that's all that goes wrong, i'm a happy camper

Again I digress...check the above pics. If you DONT have the new cam, go get um!

Thanks, Stavesacre. My service dept is one of the few good ones—and I'll gently tell the guy about mishaps others have had (glass replaced backwards, motor mount screws turned too far, and now, pins in back of headliner). Maybe they'll be careful.

Just got the sunroof TSB done.

Squeak is gone. A little bit of grime on the headliner, but I cleaned it off pretty easily with some upholstery wipes. Now there's the tiniest little nick (the size of a pin point) on one of the long 'piano black' trim pieces that runs along the center console (the piece that's silver on most 8's), but only someone as **** as me would notice it. So overall, pretty good job.

If your anything like me, those very very "minor" details were well worth the sacrifice for that sunroof to stop making noise.

I mean, I knew it was gonna be more quiet, but I didn't realize how much the rattling was annoying me until it was gone. Everything sounds so much more...smooth now. It's kinda hard to believe!

ok... i noticed some sounds weird sounds coming from my roof as well lately...

specifically, it's a loud ticking sound- ie sorta like the sound an old telegraph machine makes that you see in the movies when they were sending telegraphs- but a lot louder. i guess u could call it a rattle, but it's more of a crackling sound i suppose...

is this the type of problem that you guys experienced?

thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread. i will print out the TSB and have it looked at with my 7K mile oil change service in a few weeks and report back.

so my moon roof was rattling and i took it into the dealer to get it fixed. first they said they had never heard of this problem and then after they drove it around for a while they told me it was normal. to top the whole thing off they charged me 50 bucks to look at it even though it would have been free (warranty) if something had been wrong. just needed to vent about that. i guess i should be angry at myself for being such a push over and not saying something to them about it.

Lazarus.......come forth!!!!

Over 2 years ago?? Really??

Reguardless....print this out and take it with you.

Then demand your money back or threaten to never visit their dealership again.

Then reguardless of what they do, never visit that dealership again.

Ever.

Its the thread that wont stay dead! hey at least im searching instead of just starting a new thread and asking about something that has already been covered right? anyway...yea i should take that in and demand my cash back unfortunately im a huge pansy and i hate confrontation. i think the most irritating thing is that this dealer has always been really good in the past. this is my first problem with them. oh the frustration!
