Door Window Issue

Door Window Issue
Had my rx8 for about 8 months now and now I'm having some issues with my driver's side window. When I lower the window or even just pressing the window button, a grinding of a glass noise can be heard or a motor hitting against the door itself. After the button is pressed to roll the window all the way up, the motor doesn't stop and you can hear the grinding noise. Is this an indication of a motor replacement? or something stuck in the motor? or maybe a misaligned glass?

I have a similar issue...Slightly different though...My motor does stop...The glass is just off track...Not sure how it got that way, but oh well...I've been lazy about taking the panel off :/ I should probably get to that this weekend considering it's been doing this for about 3 months now.

I've never taken a door panel apart because I've heard that it's pretty tedious work just taking it off. I was thinking about taking it to a mazda dealer so they can take a look what the issue is. Hopefully its not a motor replacement coz that will cost me an arm and a leg to replace. Dealer is charging 400 dollars for parts and labor.

There are basically two components in there...
The window regulator:
The power window motor:
I'm guessing that the gear on either the motor or regulator (or both) is stripped. Both are made of nylon/plastic, so each are likely candidates.
You can pick up both parts for about $140 (aftermarket.) I've never replaced these parts on an RX-8, but I've done a ton on other cars, and they usually aren't too bad if you're mechanically inclined. After getting the door panel off without breaking it, the only real tricky part is manipulating the window as you replace the parts, since it'll be freely sliding in the tracks. A second person is usually a big help here.
The window will have adjustable mounts where it attaches to the regulator, so pay attention to that as you move it up and down (after the replacement.)
And if the regulator track mounting bolts have a slot, pay attention to where the old one is mounted, and put the new one in the same place.
I'll let you decide if you are up for the challenge. ;-)
