TX Driver Side Cant Lock (manually or w/keyless remote)

First off i love this site and has been real helpful for my newly bought used 04' rx8. I've read the posts saying that the keyless remote wont activate the alarm or lock the doors, but My problem may be unique

My driver side door wont lock when u press the door lock button on the drivers side or when you press LOCK on the keyless remote. The passenger door locks/unlocks fine, but every like 1 out 10 times i press the lock/unlock button it doesnt work. So it seems since the driver side doesnt lock, the alarm cant be properly set with the keyless remote.

I press LOCK, and the lights dont light up like it used to. But when i put the key in the drivers door and lock it, the lights blink. I already tried the Transmitter reset

https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...1&d=1099520144

In the middle of the reset, my driver side lock did lock/unlock twice in a row and i got happy, but it failed after that.

Maybe somebody has a more detailed reset document or any tips on how i can get this taken care of before i got to MAZDA.

Thanks Guys,
2004 Black Mazda Rx-8 GT Owner (Houston)

If your passenger side is locking with the remote, it's definitely not a remote problem and if you heard the door locking twice during the reprog, that sounds right too. Very odd problem. You said it won't lock manually either?

There's a sensor in your column that thinks the key is still in the ignition. I know when the key is in the ignition, you cannot lock the driver's side door with the remote or the lock button. I wonder if that sensor isn't faulty? I can't tell you where the sensor hook up is, but you'll probably have to remove your key ignition module to check it. I'm sure someone else can offer some better feedback who's taken this stuff apart before.

If you have two keys, put one in the ignition and try and lock/unlock the door manually from the outside. If it still works, then you know a key in the ignition won't affect your ability unlock/lock with another key.

The system is designed to stop you from locking your keys in the car.

Good Luck!

^ Agree. The fact that it is intermittent makes me think faulty sensor/electrical problem.

However, is it possible the lock mechanism is getting hung up on something inside the door? Manually move the lock back and forth and feel if there is any resistance on the physical linkages.

I can't say for sure, but I am pretty sure the alarm won't set if it doesn't detect that the lock was actuated. Could also explain how it seems quite random. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Does it seem to work better or worse in any condition vs. any other. IE, when the car is warm, vs cold. In sunlight vs in a garage? etc.

Any recent electrical work done that would point more to that?

faulty sensor

LOVE THE FEEDBACK GUYS!

Your responses seem like ur right that it may be a sensor problem.

Vyndictive- yea there is some resistance when i manually move the lock back and forth. As for the weather, its been in the mid 90's the past 3 months, which is how long i've had the car. But for the past week its been hot with absolutely no rain.

rotarykillz- i can lock my driver door manually using the back and forth ****, but i cant using the remote or the door lock button on the door.

So it looks like my RX-8 thinks my key is still in the ignition so thats why my driver side wont lock. Like i said, when i did the reprog using the turn ON then turn to LOCK method my driver side door did lock/unlock twice when i pressed the door lock button durin the reprog. Any more suggestions? I dont want MAZDA to rape me with a bill to re-program my alarm system lol.

You can use the lock/unlock button on the door even with the key in, so it shouldn't matter if the car "thinks" a key is still inserted or not. It should still work.
Its true that the lock and unlock button on the transmitter won't work with a key inserted.
I'll have to think about this one for a sec...

After looking at an electrical diagram I saw that the door's lock/unlock switch and even the actuators for the locks are wired into the Keyless Control Module.
A faulty module would explain why the transmitter and the switch doesn't engage the actuator but the reset produce did twice.
I'll keep looking around, but I'm leaning towards a faulty module.

Wait, you said like 1 in 10 times it doesn't work. Which means... it works... so it could be the motor that drives it all?

He said 1 out of 10 times for the passenger side, not the driver's which he is questioning about.

I think he meant the drivers.

Would you clarify?

Its just something i had to play with. My car may not lock like once out of the entire week. So the sign that lets me know my car is locked, is when the lights flash when i press LOCK. That lets me know both doors are locked.

What I found when I took it apart was that the gears had stripped. It was still actuating but the torque required stripped the plastic gearing inside. However, when I tried to buy JUST this part from the dealership they wouldn't let me. They would only sell me the entire door locking assembly (handle, cables, actuator, lock, and switches.) from around $100-$150. I got my part at a junkyard for about $40. Good luck.

I think I'll cross post in here as well...

Well, similar issue to the first 1/2 of this thread. After playing around with it when I got in the car after work, I realized it won't let me lock both. I

t's very peculiar; if I press lock, the pass door will lock, driver's will do nothing. If I manually move the passengers to the locked position, and press "lock" again, the passenger side will now unlock. When I then press "unlock," the passenger side then locks, unless I manually switch it back. It is almost as if the switched gets reversed if I manually switch it myself, which is not normal. As far as the driver's side, I don't think it was doing anything, but making the sound.

Having your lights blink means nothing. If I hold down the lock button on my key the lights will blink, but my driver's door will be unlocked. This is very eerie as I realized I have had one of the two doors unlocked nearly every day this entire week, and perhaps longer!

Luckily I've got totalcare extended warranty, so one trip to the dealer and I'll get back to you guys. They're also going to be checking out my 2nd gear syncro, 4th gear syncro, and lack of sound from driver's front door speakers. I'm frustrated, this car was problem free, up until 50k miles - then it hit a (figurative) wall :'(

Keep looking at other dealerships. Mine only wanted $116 for all of the parts. (Classic Mazda of Denton)
