Yeah, My 8 Started smoking too... as soon as it starts up, it billows out a bit of smoke consistently. At first I thought it was the temperature, but then I noticed it was doing it during the daytime while the temperature was in the mid 70's....

For now the dealer says that is normal.... or so they say.

It was after I got my first 'M' flash...

Yesterday when I went in to pick up my trunk organizer I ordered, The Service manager & I started talking. The first thing he told me was not to get the new update, We thought it was an 'N' flash at the time, but I gues it is just a 2nd version of the 'M' flash.

Anyways, I told him that mine was done about two weeks ago and I didn't know if it was the new one or the old 'M'. Irregardless, the engine runs really smoothly, but it does smoke pretty regularly (from the exaust).

Sorry, I didn't answer your question...

It was the first 'M' flash that started causing the smoking... We checked it out on the service slips.

I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but when they changed my oil, it was overfilled a bit... but that wouldn't burn off in the exaust.... ???

I think they flashed you with the wrong "M", because since they flashed mine, my car only has 120 hp, and uses hydrogen for fuel.
LOL

On another topic, RELAX people...I say this to myself also, we should stop with the fussin and the fueden. Stop treating each other like we stole one another's girlfriend or something (wife in my case). Don't assume you know it all...and don't reject someones question or concern out of spite or indifference.

Love man...share the LOVE

Whoa there, relax! That's a big brush you're slapping us around with and losing the respect of people who might be interested in what you have to say.

Interesting.. so what is this now, Z flash? If its a rehash of MSP04, then everyone's getting M again, no? Or is this M2?

No it was a problem with the M flash itself, there is a section of code that is corrupt. Based on certain instances, and they didn't tell me what those were, cars we're throwing a error code and a CEL. Not all cars with the M flash have experienced this, some that haven't can, and some will never. But MNAO has halted all dealerships reflashing until a new code is released. It will be N. It hasn't been determined yet whether it will be a recall or a next service update item.

Question

Ok guys, I'm a new Rx8 owner. I have been reading about the "m" flash. My car is an 04 with a six trans. There are 2 stickers under my hood on the front edge that say update with the date printed on them. Could this be a flash update? Is there anyway to tell which update that you are current on? Thanks

New car-new PCM flash - now CEL is on!

I took delivery of a 04 (TA1 pkg) last Sat. 200 miles on the car. Service manager put the latest PCM flash on before I left (didn't tell me which one other than to say it helps with no start/flooding problem).

Sat through Mon - normal driving (for a RX-8 meaning under 7500 rpm) - no problems. The car is awesome!

Tues night I had the first real opportunity for a 'spirited' drive (meaning familiar twisty back road with no traffic(and no family in the car). As soon as I cleared 8k rpm for more than a couple of seconds, the CEL started flashing. I dialed it back a little and after 10-15 secs the light went out. I thought that was strange and it bothered me a little so I took it easy after that.

No problems for the rest of the week - another 400 miles of normal driving.

Tonight I got 'spirited' again. No sooner had I crested 7500 rpm when the CEL flashed a couple of times and turned into a solid light. Now the light won't go out.

I can't believe I did anything to mess up the car already, even if I am breaking it in hard.

I hope this is related to the bad PCM flash. Anyone have an idea about what else could have caused the CEL to stay on?

I'd hate to have to declare a lemon for a car I've already fallen in love with

That's interesting XeRo. I was in getting the oil in my wife's MPV changed, and there was a gal who brought her car in for a CEL after she had gotten done gunning it. Apparently, the service guy said she needed new "software", but that it wasn't "available" yet because it's only a few weeks old and there's been delays getting it. I wonder if this is a "N" or simply a redo of the MSP04? I got the MSP04 in late August when I took delivery and have had no issues thankfully. But I have to say I've been going very easy on my 8 (maybe only a few trips to the 8000 rpm range thus far, only about 1100 miles to date). I'm just wondering if I will need this new flash for my car when it does come out, or if it is just the MSP04 all over again. If it ain't broke, why fix it, right?

Mine is an May 03 build, delivered July 2003. I had been running on the original flast untill two weeks ago. I had tried to be reflashed earlier, but dealer at that time was only flashing cars that had a verified problem. Got the M-N flash done after getting the letter from Mazda 11/07 and got my first cel on 11/09. Even though I always tighten the gas cap securely I checked it again and it was tight. Still have light and havent taken it back to dealer yet. Guess I will wait till this gets straightened out.

I've had no hard starting issues with my 8 since I've had it... until now. I got the latest reflash a couple weeks ago when I had it in for the front brake pad replacement. On Sunday, I tried to start my car and it wouldn't start for the first time. I had it flat bedded to the Mazda dealer and they've got it right now.

They're telling me that the current reflash has problems and they're waitng for a new reflash to be introduced. They said all they can do for right now is pull my plugs and let them dry out.

This incindent alone will prevent me from buying another rotary. I have no tolerance for $31,100 cars that don't start with only 8,000 miles on them.

I'm sorry for those of you having problems... but come on... has your car really been in the shop that much? Mine has been broke down for 91 days out of the 156 I have owned the car.

Anyway... fortunately flooding is the only problem I didn't have. I agree Mazda needs to get their stuff together. I can understand them having problems with their "first year car", but they need to understand that they will have these problems and be prepared to fix them. Everything from flooding, transmissions, clutches...
