Howdy Ya'll,
I drive an Automatic, 2004 RX8. I got it used at 20,000 kilometers about 3 years ago. It just hit 60,000 kilometers. Regular maintenance is always done and I always keep my fluids topped up.
Within the last month I have noticed a lag when pressing the gas pedal. It does not do it all the time, only after the car has been driven for a bit.
It doesn't seem to matter how much I press the gas, the lag still exists between gearing and is very noticeable on inclines. Seems to be happening from a full stop, the car jerks a bit when I'm off the brake..then the lag occurs between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears. By the time I am in 3rd it seems to run closer to how it should.
I read over CherryShinka05's post about having a sluggish feeling at low RPMs and I was wondering if perhaps my problem is the same. The difference is, I don't stall out at Idle.
I have taken the car to my local Mazda dealer and they said they could find nothing wrong with the car, no codes, and even after they test drove it, zero issues.
Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Happy to provide more information if requested.

I don't buy Kool-Aid
Did they ever do the compression test? This is how my car would run when hot and when I only had 1 oil cooler. Till my engine died.
Call your mazda dealer and ask about the test? this should help. Also if they cant tell whats wrong with it take them for a ride.

I've got a call into them now to see if they ever did a compression test on the engine. I would assume that they didn't because if there were no codes on it, they would see no need to spend anymore time on it. Seems to be how the dealers work around here.
I'll have to drive it around a bit before I can get someone to ride with me. It's unpredictable as to when it's going to start acting up.
Thank you for your suggestions

I have an appointment for tomorrow morning. They said because there were no codes, they neglected to do a compression test.
and I managed to get the car to do it yesterday and noticed that during the lag between gear changes there is a bubbling/popping popcorn sound. If you've ever heard a deep fryer going at full tilt..that's the sound...like hot oil.

I live in Nova Scotia, Canada.
An update:
They found nothing wrong with the engine as far as the compression test results are concerned. The service manager lectured me on how I am supposed to drive the car..which I took offense to, but that is neither here nor there. He said that there is always lag at the lower RPMs with Automatics. So I will always have lag up to 4000 RPM before it start to zoom zoom.
I stated that I am aware of that and that the lag I am referring to is over and above any sort of "standard" lower RPM lag. Wouldn't listen to me, I got fed up and just went and picked up my car.
Here are the results as per my invoice:
Performed Compression Test
Front Chamber 7.5/7.5/7.5 KG/CM2
Rear Chamber 8.0/8.0/8.0 KG/CM2
Standard Max is 8.5 KG/CM2
Min is 6.9 KG/CM2
Difference between the 2 range is 1.5 KG/CM2 - Within Specs
I drove the car home. I didn't drive it over the weekend, I usually drive my Jeep. Monday morning rolls around, I go to start the car and it doesn't catch. Turns over, but doesn't catch.
I've been busy with work, it's just gone into the dealership today, probably for a flooded engine and I am still no closer to the source of the gear lag.
