engine trouble
yesterday i stopped at a gas station, but when i came back out my 8 wouldn't start. the engine did turn over (new battery so that's not the problem), but i couldn't get it to fire completely. so i left it there because i had a baseball game, came back 5 hours later, and it turned on with no problem.
has anyone had anything similar to this happen? is it something i should get checked out? i just had an oil change the day before, that wouldn't have anything to do with it i'm assuming.
thanks for your input

how old is your inginition? hows your cat? what year, mileage, and what maintance has been done? mods? hot start issues could be low compression. do you have the upgraded starter and battery? 6mt or auto-tragic?

not sure about the ignition. cats were replaced a few months ago. 2005, about 68k miles. all the normal maintenance has been done for a car w/this many miles. no mods. not sure about the starter, but a new battery. it's an automatic/slapshift

cats were changed? Do you mean the coils? What about the CATALYTIC converter?
Both could be causes of your issues if you're having problems with them.
Check your plugs and coils.
Check to see if your CAT glows red after a hard drive (or pull the front down an look inside with a flashlight for damage)
Mazda has a 8year/100k mile warranty on the engine core. If the above advice fails, bring it to a dealer for a compression test. If it fails compression, you should fall under the warranty (if you have all service records)

the inginition on our cars from the factory are pretty weak. the coils usually only last about 30k give or take, but its important to keep ing parts in good working order or it will cause problems. the original post i made is the usuall check list and what mazda will want to know/replace before a new engine. there are also things that should be cleaned once in a while-maf, ess, airfilter. did you throw a cel?
hope this helps jesse
btw the search function at the top of the page is very helpful, oh yhea welcome

i think it's the coils but i'm not sure. i tried running it, and something was obviously wrong. eventually the engine started smoking, and it smelled kind of electric/plastic. so i sent it into the dealership. anyone know what it will cost to get new coils or whatever?

The same set at Autozone is about $80.
