Faulty Broken A/C Heater Mode Control Lights
Frustrated as I couldn't find any reference to this after a search (hence my long subject line to help others find this), I figure I'd just post what I've found so far.
Problem: The indicator lights on the circular cluster of push button controls for A/C, Defog, heater modes, recirc, etc, under the radio have stopped working. The buttons still operate though as indicated on the LCD display.
Partial Solution: I pulled the radio console out and when I exerted outward pressure on the lower section of the console (i.e made the bottom bow out towards me) the lights started working again. I don't think it is connector issue as I jiggled the connector quite a bit. I suspect it is a broken solder joint or cracked circuit board, but I'm open to suggestions or the real problem/solution if someone else has experienced this.
For now I just wacked it, pushed the console back in gently and will hope that the lights work for a while, but I suspect they'll stop working very soon. I'll need to pull it out again, take off the radio and wiring harnesses, and pull the controls and look at any electronics that is in there to debug and fix it permanently.
Keywords: a/c light, air conditioner light, a/c led, heater light, defog light, recirc light, cracked circuit board, bad solder joint, heater controls

it could be cold solder points, not like it never happened before.
Those who have FC should know what Im talking about.
I dunno where they outsource these parts to, but it seems that Mazda picked a very crappy supplier.
