I guess I was unaware of this. Only encountered this problem with the 8. I guess its time to check since I'm at 60k now :)

Bad design? Our disc brake calipers are pretty much the same as all others on the market to include their booted slide rods. It would be nice if everything were maintenance free and lasted a lifetime, but here in the real world that's just not the case.

Try a clamp type wrench and a 'persuader' (2 lb hand sledge hammer) to rotate-free the seized rod. If that fails then I guess you'll have to replace the caliper.

In the future inspect/clean/lube the rods every couple-few years or so dependent on your local operating environment, brake use (or lack thereof), etc.

preventive maintenance? How do you prevent that? It is a bad design that allows moisture to seep inside and corrode. It should last a lifetime

blue: did you get it out?
I had one seized a few months back, talk about a BITCH to get out. Lots of penetrating solution, C Clamps, vice grip, and BRUTE force to pull it straight out. Last thing I wanted was the stupid bolt snapping as I was trying to get it out.

I just ordered a new bracket from Mazmart. For the $85 that is cost me, I would rather not have to hurt myself to try and get it out.

don't forget to lube that bad boy up real nice and good before you go sticking it in there. Oh, and remember to use a new rubber or you'll get stuck again.

;)

I needed to order some anti-sissy pills, but those haven't come yet either

Ja, you don't need more child support payments.

Got the new caliper bracket on. Just for the hell of it I whaled on the old one with a hammer for about 5 minutes and the old bolt still didn't move. Must have welded the thing inside.

I had a stuck caliper bolt (stuck in out pos.) on my left front brake when I was replacing pads/rotors last November. I tried everything I could think of to get it out. I called a friend who suggested that I put the bracket in a vice, make sure that all brake fluid is gone. Then use a propane tourch to heat the bolt just a little and then start turning it. This actually worked. It went from being able to turn it a 1/4 inch to being able to pull it out, albeit with effort.

After a good cleaning and new grease it was just like new. I do check it from time to time and it still looks good.

Hmmm, maybe I'll try that now that my car is back together.
