Fuel Fill Flow Back

Fuel Fill Flow Back
I've had my 8 for a bout 3 weeks now and I've put gas into it about 4 times already.
The first few times this never happened but the last 2 fills when the pump clicks I get a bunch of back flow that promptly dumps all over the side the car.
I don't know why some fills it doesn't happen and other it does. I always filled the tank completely on each fill.

Possibly pumping in too quick, not sure with your pump handles, but slow down the flow a little, particularly when you get near the full mark, even take the nozzle out and put it back in after a few seconds will help.
But basically you are putting in the gas too quick..IMO

OH GOD YES! I AM NO LONGER ALONE!!!!!!
I have the exact same problem you do. Automatic shut offs do not shut off in time, if at all (I spilled more then 2 cups of gas on the ground when using the auto pump at the slowest possible speed. it just didn't turn off). My tank has overflowed at gas stations from Richmond to Irvine. It is consistent, it is NOT THE PUMP. There is something wrong with the tank or filler neck or evap system but the dealer cant figure it out, even after dropping the tank and replacing the filler neck.
Anyone who can shed light on this bullshit would be my hero for the month. I own a 30 thousand dollar sports car and I cant put gas in it without it overflowing all over my paint, making me look like a retard.
The only way to keep it from happening is to ride the frustratingly fine line between pumping at all, and not pumping, and even then sometimes it still pukes gas up, but thankfully not enough to splash all the way down the side of the car.

Sorry guys, I still think you are pumping in the gas too quick or fast..
I can't see how replacing the "filler neck" would have changed anything.
I seriously have not heard this as a common issue with RX-8's, other than too much fuel going in at once which can create an Air Lock which has to go somewhere, so it pushes the fuel back up and out.
I find with the pumps in Australia if I pump with trigger on Max, it will Auto Shut off repeatedly, so I have to squeeze the tripper more "gently", I don't see it as a fault of the car as other cars I have owned have done the same or similar thing.
This is why I say it may be the gas pump you are using that is not calibrated to turn off if it senses a fuel blow back, like it should.
As I said i have not heard many complaints on this forum, perhaps someone can direct me to them.

I have it to. When the thing clicks full it instantly overflows.
What I've found is that when I manually hold the lever and lower the speed as it nears full and drop the second it clicks I don't get overflow.

Here is a scoop.. not all fuel tank designs are the same, in fact every model of car made has it's own design fuel system.
I see ( Auto pumps were banned here last century) do your pumping manually, the burping is normal with this car, part of the evaporative emission control/carbon cannister system of pipes.
I get the "burp" but fuel returns back down the filler tube, not outside over car.
It is not an epidemic issue on this forum.
Dont use AUTO Fill and it won't happen.

I've got the same problem. It varies from station to station.
I don't know what the pumps and nozzles are like in Australia or even most other places in the US, but everyplace I've filled up the automatic shutoff is active even if you pump manually. I guess you could listen, like pump jockeys used to before automatic shutoffs.
What works for me is to drop the pump speed down to the lowest rate for the last couple of gallons.
The problem can be a clogged vent in the tank. There was a post here by someone who found that a vent tube was clogged with spiderwebs. He cleaned it out and that solved it for him. A friend with experience with a lot of vehicles has told me that this does happen with other cars, and it's often a clogged (or parially clogged) vent.
If it becomes worse with my 8, I suppose I'll look in the shop manual to see just what the vent tube is, and how to get at it for a clean-out.

Overflowed again this morning, spilling gas all down the side of the car.
I was pumping by hand and as slow as i could possibly get it to pump.
Luckily I now keep a bottle of water on hand to wash it off so I can at least look like a well prepared retard with a sports car.
