Fuel Pump

Just wanted to clarify what the symtoms of a crook fuel pump would be, I've been to the mechanics today and they said it needs to be replaced and have quoted it and reckon its gunna be $440 for the part alone.
From what I've heard a fuel pump normally just works or doesn't work , and even if it wasn't working 100% wouldn't I be able to notice it performance wise such as not being able to reach high revs ?
Anyway I've found a fuel pump on Online Mazda Parts and they have them priced for $325.
All signs for far are pointing to this guy is trying to rip me off. Couldn't anyone shine some light on this for me ?
Thanks all !

Rock Auto has the fuel pump assy for $191. Try other online auto parts stores.
Fuel pumps usually overheat when they begin to go bad. A fresh full tank of gas cools them and they start working again.
There is likely a DIY on replacing it, on this site, some where. I've done it. It's not that difficult. There are some plastic parts that can snap off if you aren't careful.

thanks alnielson,
& Cajun I have searched and I'm not having any of the symtoms others have said with pump issues are, so I was just curious why the mechanic would think it needs replacing.
I can redline the 8 noworries without any sudden loss of power or rpm drop, also I do accumulate a black dust on the back of the car but I have found that pretty common with yellow cars that exhaust fumes do show alot more than other colors, Its not asif its spluttering black crap out the back everywhere.
I do feel the mechanic has seen me as a young kid that he can try rip off easy, as he tried to charge me an extra $20 when I went too pay my service, though he could be right and I could be damaging the car if I keep driving it.
I guess the best solution is to take it too another mechanic?

Oops, sorry lakeus, just went back and read your original post. I obviously misunderstood you. You can go to most auto part stores and get your OBD codes scanned for free and they can usually define them. Mine was running good when the CEL came on and after awhile it started misfiring. Did the tuneup, air filter, cleaned MAF, oil change. Ran better but still misfired at high rpm so I'm hoping midpipe and ESS clearing will fix it. Not sure when I'll get to it. I have an 04 yellow GT , but I get free car washes so I never notice black residue. Please let us know when you find out. Good luck
