Fuel pump retaining ring issues..
I'll let the photo and the thread speak for itself.
By the way, I own only three functional fingers and my thumb. That is my index finger sticking out
Anyways. How did you guys manage this? I've been gently banging this thing for almost an hour with a pretty big flat head and a mallet with negative success of 3 tab piece murders. Im pretty sure this thing hasn't been opened since 2003 so.. any ideas guys other then borrowing or buying the SST?

I just had the same issue as you but I tried the tabs on the side and it began to move they seem stronger than the top ones. is your tank full? mine was full and I spilled gas all over the top of my tank and driveway. when you get it loose the module will not come all the way out until the siphon hose and wire connector are disconnected.

Probably won't help much. You may have to get the "special tool". Either that or do some searches as I just saw a thread where some have actually cut off the black tabs, but you DID NOT hear that from me!
Might wanna call your local dealer and ask the service manager to just borrow the SST ( the fuel tank "special service tool"). Mazda allows it.
I've also heard this works. http://www.amazon.com/Lock-Technolog.../dp/B000I14PGQ

No my tank is nearly empty. I released the pressure from the gas cap but still managed to get squirted a bit by the fuel line to the top of the venturi.
Mazsurfer, that was the DIY I was going by to get this done. : (
I'll definitely check into that, my warrantys already done with being over a 100k so Im sure they possibly not mind.
Bumblebee, Im envious I wish I had a welder I could use.
