Funny Engine noises between 3-4K
Black 2004 GT - Manual Transmission. 27500 miles. Original spark plugs. Never been flooded. getting approx 17-18 mpg in the city... 21 on the hiway.
The gal and I were out and about this evening, going for dinner, then to watch a movie. Its "warm" (80's), but not hot. A little bit humid too.
Filled up with really expensive gas... (almost $45 of premium...93 octane), and then pulled around for the touchless car wash (the cheap one, that sprays you with water, a rediculously diluted soap, and 3 rounds of spot free... works okay for the dust).
Pulled out of the car wash, and accelerated to 45, and heard a very deep note from the exhaust when the RPMs were between 3000 and 4000 rpm. Turned the radio off, kept it in 3rd, and gently accelerated again... same deep, loud exhaust note, but also a "marble rolling in the tin can" sound. not shaking, but rolling... like a heat sheild noise or something (didnt' sound like knock...). I could duplicate the sound in 2nd gear and 4th gear. It did NOT sound like that in first, but that could be because it is just not hard to move the car in first.
The car seems to be a little rougher in idle, and it didnt' seem to have the "kick" on the accelerator that I remember...
Parked the car and picked up my 300m to drive for the rest of the night, and now the RX8 is sitting... (will have to go to the dealer on tuesday).
Regular oil changes at 6K, as per dealer specs. I have been doing an "oil only" change in between those oil change visits.. as I like to have very clear, non oxidized oil in my engines... and 6K seems a little too long (even though the dealer, and manual state that is is good)
Any suggestions as to where I should point the dealer when I take it in?

Interesting. I've had the problem too, and the last time it happened, the car died on me within 1/2 mile of filling up with gas (93 also, at least that's what it said on the pump). I've had the car in to the dealer, and they've been unable to reproduce the problem. They suggested maybe vapor lock...
