Greddy Turbo/Intercooler Issue

Have an 04 RX-8 with Greddy turbo and intercooler, veilside trim, etc., etc... and my husband hit a coyote driving home last week. The coyote went under the car (strangely did not damage the front bumper or trim) made a "thump" and ran the 5 miles home with no problem. The next day, smoke was coming out of the exhaust, and took it to a local mech who said that "the intercooler was knocked out" and we needed to replace the turbo. Didn't make sense to me, but I don't know enough about it. He said if we started it again, it could blow the engine. Does anyone have any ideas about what this could be? Appreciate the help...

maybe you knocked off the intercooler piping which cause the turbo to suck up road debris. that could've definately destroyed the turbo. if the turbo inlet sucks up anything and breaks off inside, that could send shrapnel into the motor...
