Grinding Hollow Sound, when letting off the foot of the gas

First of all, if my post doenst make any sense I am sorry. english is my second language.
Second my Car is 2004 model MT with 59k miles. Redline it every day since i owned the car for 4 and half years. I always keep with oil changes etc.
3rd this is my second rotary car, owned a 91 FC for 4 years before moving to the US from okinawa.
4th changed out the sparkplugs at 40k. but didnt change out coils . I only put premium gas. Also the car runs fine, just hollow sound when i left off the gas.

This all started about a month and half ago. A day before i had to take my car to the bodyshop.

So my car got the Stuck valve error (which gave me loss of power in 5th and 6th gear) a week after Hurrican Ike. Since my car got banged up by the debri caused by hurricane. i decided to take the car in for bodywork before i did the engine clean up.

While driving to the shop, i notice a kO kO kO (like a hollow grind sound, coming from passenger side front) sound every time i let off the gas when i was in 1st gear. But Since this sound started the same day as the whole loss of power issues i figured must be related.

So i got my car back 2 weeks ago, did the Engine Clean up . it fixed my loss of power issues, but i still have his hollow grind sound. Now the day that the engine started to get these issues, i let my other half borrow the car to drive to her sisters. She notice while driving on the highway she would have no power in 5 or 6th. So she thought maybe she was not giving it enough gas so she applies more pressure to the gas pedal.

Now i wonder by her doing that, did she crack the exhaust. Which i might be seeing as a exhaust leak.

But then what is else is funny is, when i drive over something ruff on the road it makes a Ko Ko Ko noise ( i notice this today). And sometimes when downshiting it does it also. I also wonder if it can be a Cat problem. Or a mount problem.

I have been driving my Mazda 3 , so i really havent drove the 8 since it got out of the bodyshop. i just drove it after i done the engine clean up.

So i was wondering when i take it to the dealership, should i just tell that i am hving a loss of power (even though i am not any more) and hollow noise. Hoping they swap out the engine . Or leave out the hollow noise info out and if they do swap out the engine tell them its making a hollow noise after its been swapped.

I dont like to lie (even though my wife says i should), and get any of the tech in trouble. but at the same time, i dton want to pay for something that happend at the same with my engine loss issues. Also should i leave out that i done the Engine Cleanup.
I am Very (hmm how do the we say in america ) cross feeling?

I'd take it to the dealer and tell them you've been experiencing power loss, and see if they notice anything else.

Honestly, you're not technically lying to them, you're just omitting a few things, and sometimes it's better to let them find things while doing a diagnosis, because sometimes when you tell them everything straight up, they won't even bother looking into it and just say "Well, that's going to cost you XXXX$"

Tell them about the power loss, which you know about it, and so do they...let them figure out that hollow noise.

Does it make the noise on lift throttle, both in gear and not in gear? Or only in first gear as you say in your post?

Well it started to only do in first gear. so example, say that i am in a parkinglot looking for a space to park. I am at speeds of 5mph in first gear then i let off the gas to coast. As soon as i let off the engine should normally should make a Varoom noise while idling down. But in my case it makes a Ko ko Ko hollow noise. But i am starting to think maybe mount, because when you let off the gas in 1st gear, the car kinda of jolts due to 1st gear being the power gear. so maybe what im hearing is the engine moving back and forth once i left off the gas come o think of it.

I havent drove my car in 2 weeks since i done the Engine clean. But yesterday i decided to take out the 8 instead of the MZ3. At first it was just doing it in first gear. but then i notice that ever time i downshifted from 4th to 3rd i can slighty hear the hollow noise. Then i notice that when i was going over bumps i can hear also. which made me think might be a mount problem.

but yah going do hwat cyber and the other said. just going to let it sit till Dec 1st to take it in to the dealer. not going to worry about the car. And pretty much play dumb with them lol. Wife is all *&*^&tchy about the 8 lol.

The car runs perfect though, no hesitation at all. no noises while going to thru the gears.

when my cat failed, my car was SO F'ING LOUD it was kinda awesome

IDK, might be the cat if the car is louder and your losing power. My car did 0-60 in 14 seconds when my cat was clogged ( I counted)

Isn't it just the normal sound when you let off the throttle in 1st as the gearing is very low so the engine brake bites? My new model does the same, but if I dip the clutch it coasts and goes away. A whirring sound would be the best description.

the sound wasnt consistent for me when my cat was clogged. I have the typhoon intake on my car so the sound was heavily amplified with that intake on there.

you could be running rich and getting a slight backfire when you let off the gas, you only get the sound on the overrun?

My car sounds kind of similar, I think my catalytic converter got toasted when I did the Mazda zoom zoom cleaner. TeamRX8 was right when he said to remove the cat when you start it back up or its going bye bye.

I will take a peak at mine when I can, but between family and autocross I just don't know when that will be. Maybe this Saturday.

Hey Alfy, I know beaumont is forever away from Houston, but if you ever make it to one of the monthly meets theres a guy whos building a rotary compression tester. He tested mine and it seems to work. Right now he's trying to get good data on it so he will do free compression tests.

^^ swee thanks man. I taken it to mazda today. they did a flash. so i get back in the car, i didnt even have to leave the lot to still hear the sound. so i get the tech to come out. he jumps in , i drove the car around the lot, to show him ths noise he hears it, then he tells me we can check it out.

I told him, it can be a Clogged Cat, Cracked Engine mount (which my miles is 59925/60k). but he says, if nothing shows up, then i get charged 114.00. i guess i dont uunder stand why i should i have ot tell them what the issue can be.

I told him sure, but tomorow when i dropp off the car i am going to ask him, when a person tells you they are having loss of power issues. you guys just automatcly just do reflash (with new update) and call it a day? you guys dont find out why this car is having loss of power? I mean come on, i taken the tires off the passenger side, and checked hte mount my self. i didnt see any cracks. I guess, i just think they would do better at inspecting a problem.

Plus i even told them, the 2 days ago when i went into 5th gear, my car made a Loud noise with no power. that right there should of let them know that is not normal. and no freaking flash update is going to fix that problem.

sorry i just dont understand these techs.

Dealerships are faggits, no surprise, harass them until they do their job, and if they don't, call MazdaUSA while at the dealership.

I PM'd you as well, but if all else fails I'll be inspecting mine as soon as I get a chance. I could help you out on yours if you need the help.

Mine started making the same sound right after the hurricane as well. I also did the Mazda Zoom Zoom engine cleaner the day before the hurricane hit.

yah i ended up calling mazdausa. because i feel what my dealership is doing is bs.

i told Eric (mazdausa)

YOu bring your car in for service. you tell me what you need done and you tell me your having loss of power and loud noise sometimes happens while your 5th gear.

would you be happy if i told you, hey we will do a flash update and hope htat fixes the problem. Now i can understand if its just lack of power, but lack of power with Loud Noises. sorry but Loud Noises is Key that no flash is going to fix.

now mr eric, would you think common sense would of told them, this guy is having these tyep of problems we should hook it up for diagnosis test to see why he is having this issues. Why should i have to drop off the car twice in one day, even though i told them in teh beginning that A. I am having loss of power issues. B. my car makes noises when i let off the gas while im in 1st gear. C and some times my car makes loud noises when i am in 5th gear.

DO these ppl really think flash updates is going to fix my noise problems. ALso what happens tommorow if am charge 114.00 because for some reason the error couldnt be replicated. when they should of inspected the KNOWN issues of lack of power. such as Taking off the cat ,unscrew 4 bolts . any how sorry all, ill just have to wait tommorw and see what happens.

And once i go in tommorow and ask them what they done. I am going to do what heavymetal said, jack the car in front them and inspect the Converter in their parking lot.

any how think ll go MSpaint something lol.
