handing over the keys with fear of engine flooding
just got my 8 a week ago. i'm very paranoid about engine flooding, so i follow the rules pretty tight. but what happens when i have to get work done? can i trust , say, a mechanic to know not to shut off the engine when it's cold? they often have to park the car on the lot until they can work on it. hours later, when they're ready, they move it into the garage and shut it off after only being on for a few seconds. i trust a mazda service department to know, but i can't trust that it's common knowledge nor can i trust someone who won't care even if they did know.

I stole the basic idea from Cool-Blue-Dad and did some wordsmithing and graphic work on his idea.

Good job Go48 (and thanks for the credit).
zeliggusgus, I put a sign very much like Go48's final version in my RX-8 when it needed to be flatbedded 2 hours away to the dealership/body-shop. I didn't expect the tow-truck driver to know anything about rotary flooding and I even had my doubts about the Mazda service center. All it takes is one new guy who hasn't heard that one and *bam*, he'll flood you.
Anyway, no one complained about the sign and I found it worn and somewhat tattered, but still in place in my vehicle after 6 weeks at the dealership.
We've talked about using these signs for service work, valet parking and ignorant family members. I think using a sign cuts the worry-factor to nearly zero.

Eh, Im not going to read that. It's wrong if it disagrees with me. Period, end of story.
I've never let my car idle for 5 minutes for cold starts. Even on the COLDEST days of like 45f.

i like the sign idea. but also i think it's a good idea to straight up tell the person who may drive your car to make sure to follow those rules. don't want to rely just on the sign. then they can't claim that they didn't see the sign or something like that.

The engine can only be leaned out so much at cold start. Gasoline doesn't vaporize very well when cold so the engine needs a bit more of it initially to fire up, not to mention the catalytic converter considerations.

My automatic was at a bodyshop and needless to say, they flooded it. They got it working again though, but you can really smell the burning oil. I say, if they aren't a mazda service department, tell them not to shut off cold before you hand them the keys.
