Unhappy Help!! 2004 Automatic (no 3rd or 4th gear!)

I'll be the first to admit I'm not a car person.

Still, the first time I saw an RX8 I fell in love. First it was with the way it looks. Next, it was the cool-ness of the rotary engine. Of course, the fact that it looooooves to go fast didn't hurt. ; )

Someone who knew I'd fallen in love with it gave a 2004 RX8 automatic to me, as a present. I call it my spaceship. ::laughing:: And my spaceship is sick.

I'm a girl, if you haven't figured that out already (and don't be mean to me because I am). New engine was put in about 5 months ago, but now there is a new problem.

It's been progressively getting worse. And now, as of last night, I not only have no fourth gear, but no third gear either. It can only be driven in manual right now, and driving 50 in 2nd gear while everyone passes me is no kind of fun....and can't be at all good for the car.

I'm broker than broke right now. I have a feeling the clutch needs to be replaced, but I'm counting on the collective knowledge and experience of you fine people to confirm it for me....since I can't afford to take it to the dealer. I will have to buy the parts and pay someone knowledgeable to put it in.

I'm just scared to do that and have it not actually be the problem. I can't afford for that to happen. So please, any advice you RX8 geniuses would be willing to impart to me...I'm all ears.

Take it to a transmission shop; (ie Ammco, etc.), they should be able tohelp you at a reasonable price.

It could just need some trans-fluid added.......do you have the manual?

Transmission fluid was the first thing I checked...it was a little low, but otherwise fine. Took it to AAMCO this morning...they called and said the transmission needs to be replaced. :\ Ugh.

Thanks though, both of you guys, for offering a little help!

They will probably have a few options. It will depend on how long you want to keep the car and what warranty you want....

My poor RX8 was a casualty of Hurricane Sandy....it was smashed by a poplar tree. :/ Not one panel survived without damage; it even knocked some stuff under the hood out of whack. I just got the transmission issue worked out, too.

Thinking I'm going to replace it with another RX8, though...hopefully a 2006 or newer.

: ) This isn't my car, but one just like it. I pick up mine from the dealer on Monday. Same year/model/exterior/interior colors, though!
